LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Vitali Klitschko is getting his chance to fight Lennox Lewis earlier than expected.

Lewis will defend his heavyweight title against Klitschko on June 21 at Staples Center.

Lewis' scheduled opponent, Kirk Johnson, dropped out of the fight after tearing a chest muscle in training. That accelerated the Lewis-Klitschko bout that was planned for later this year.

Klitschko is the No. 1 contender for Lewis' WBC heavyweight title and was scheduled to fight on the undercard. His fight against Cedrick Boswell was canceled.

Lewis (40-2-1, 31 knockouts) hasn't fought since successfully defending his WBC-IBF crown by knocking out Mike Tyson in the eighth round in Memphis, Tenn., on June 8, 2002.

The 31-year-old Klitschko (32-1, 31 knockouts) thought he had a deal to fight Lewis in April. Lewis wanted to fight a rematch against Mike Tyson instead, but Johnson was scheduled for the bout when Tyson didn't agree to it.

Lewis, 37, previously had agreed to meet the 6-foot-7 Klitschko by December to stop litigation over whether Lewis owes him a mandatory title defense.

The fight card will be broadcast live on HBO.

I think Klitschko has a solid chance to pull the upset. I think his style might keep Lewis off balance and who knows what will happen then. It definitely isn't like Lewis is unbeatable.

Nope, not at all. I just don't think Klitschko has a shot in Hell.

Never know though, one punch is all it takes with guys this size.

Neither Klitchko has a chance...but you never know in the world of boxing..Klaus Peter of Universum boxing is a very powerful man...and with Lewis looking to retire almost anyday now...Like I said "Who knows in the world of boxing?"
Is the fix in?

Which one of these guys is which? I bet on one a couple months ago and thought it was the other one.

Can someone post something that clearly tells which tomato can is which?

Also, how can either one of these guys get properly prepared for this fight on such short notice?

Vitali was waiting in the wings training to fight Cedric Boswell on the undercard, so they were both in camp. Both the opp's that Lennox and Vitali were training for were much different than each other. It is suprising to me as well that Lennox took this, but he originally had a fight w/ Vitali months ago. IMo the odds are right and lennox should be in good enough shape to hold him off. It isn't all about the money here, so u figure Lewis has to be confident, while Vitali has NOTHING to lose. if he would lose b4 he got to Lewis, like Wlad, his stock would become $hit, so thats why he took this fight now. B4 he too can be exposed. The nothing to lose, no pressure attitude might end up making Vitali a play, but it all depends on how you bet the fights. I don't measure that being worth much, but I don't know how that holds up long term betting wise.

Wow! I'm just impressed that this fight is going to happen. IMO, it says a TON about Lewis...training for a lesser opponent (again, imo) and at the last second taking on a much tougher one. It shows his commitment to the sport and his title.

ON THE OTHER HAND!

Phuck 'em both... Id rather see Gatti/Ward IV!!!!!

REAL FIGHT??????

Whaattttt?!? (in the my best Joe Dirt voice)

Did you see even the last Gatti/Ward fight??? It doesn't get any more 'real' than the 30 rounds those two fought.... I'd keep my $49.95 PPV fee for some Lewis fight (not that I really pay it, lol) and watch a rematch of Gatti/Ward fight ANY day.

LOL

No man,,,you misunderstood..

I would rather watch any REAL fight, rather than the Lewis/Klitschko show.

Gatti/Ward, i would prefer watching any replay of any of their 3 fights over Lewis/Klitschko...lol

Gatti / Ward was one of the best fight series i have EVER seen.
Will be seeing all 3 of them on ESPN Classic Sports for years to come.

Glad you caught the last Gatti/Ward fight. These guys have reminded me that BOXING is really a SPORT and not just an EVENT! Let's hope we can see more 'sporting' events from boxing and less 'spectacles' in the future!
