The way athletes 'baby' their equipment Hammy?

He has to know, I`m sure he knows when to do his next needle in his ass too...just another sad day for baseball...I wonder if Dud Selig will have any balls and really suspend him...It never ends

Chance that he knew he had an illegal bat and has been using illegal bats knowingly in the past is probably 99.99999999%.

By the way, I think a corked bat is lighter isn't it? That's the whole point... bat speed I think. Someone who makes his living playing baseball probably can tell in a heartbeat by just holding the bat in his hands I would imagine... don't know though... I never played ball.

I played all my life, he knew! I could tell if there was a tick on the bat and needless to say I'm no Sammy Sosa. I can say I never cheated, ever but who gives a damn. Probably would have been difficult to put cork in my aluminum bat! I guess it all equals out, he brings those bats with the holes in them or is he just striking out a lot? What a dope!!!

It matters NOT what anyone believes or WHO the player was who committed the infraction...MLB will implement protocol for the rule infraction as history has previously dictated.

Note: There wasn't a vote casted, upon my behalf.

Players pay big money for their bats! Guarantee there ae other players doing the same as Sammy, just haven't been caught! Lets see if the Home Runs per year go down in the Major League now! Bet they will! Not just Sammy's!!

I agree, it is a sad day for baseball.... I don't know much about how they regulate those situations after the fact, but don't they do anything before something like this happens?

I don't think he uses one every game....but only sometimes. He definitely is an ephedra/steroid/caffene/andro freak. If you look at his stats the past 5/6/7 years it is comparable to the top production runs since gehrig/williams/mantle....at least in runs/rbi/homers. Nobody really brings this up cuz they know he is on SOMETHING.

In addition to the speed of the bat, cork also has a stretching feature which absorbs shock. Therefore, you dont' have to hit the ball on the sweet spot as often for the ball to jump. Cork also has the bouncy/rubber band like properties. So the cork generates alot of energy going out towards the field of play.

I believe that Sosa definitely uses a corked bat..In baseball its about hand speed and quickness at the plate..A corked bat is a lighter bat..If Home Run production goes down now its a indicator that others pulled back with their antics..Where there is smoke there is fire..Fans go to games to see the long ball..These athletes have incredible pressure to perform..They find shortcuts..Its human nature..

its illegal on paper...but who knows if major league baseball endorses it under the table to certain players. Or how many times they have secretly warned these players before taking action.

X-ray tests conducted today upon all 76 remaining bats belonging to Chicago Cub slugger Sammy Sosa, who was ejected from yesterday's game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for using a "corked" illegal bat, were found to be NEGATIVE for foreign substances...namely cork.

However, IQ as well as Steroid testing was not conducted, as odds of "mistakenly" selecting (1 in 77) “the bat” continue to baffle league officials now tasked with deciding what retributions will be handed down upon the slugging star Sosa.

Interesting note from Chicago. In 17 inning game against Houston, Sammy goes 0-6 or something like that. Comes up in 17th for his last at bat with guys on, guess what?? The light ash bat he used in previous 0-fer at bats is in the dugout.

Sammy drives in the winning run with, you guessed it--the BLACK BAT!!! Would be the corked one would it??? Say it aint SO, Sammy!!

It wouldn't be the first time that someone crawled through the ceiling to break into the umps locker room to swap the bats.

For that matter, the umps may have just let them swap the bats out-Baseball can NOT afford this black eye-especially not on Sosa.

Here's the BIG question:
Why the hell does he have 76 bats in the first place??
He plays 160 something games per season.
Why does he need a new bat after every two games? Does he use a bat for 2 games and then gets a new bat? (If so, what's he doing with all the bats he used so far this season?)
There should be a rule or penalty against one player having that many bats.
New Fine: $10,000 for every bat you have above the number of runs you score in a season.

(The whole team shouldn't need 76 bats, let alone one player.)

One; he had 77 bats, one of which was illegal and clearly marked, yet he picked the ONE bat, which was clearly marked out of 77 unknowingly? The ODDS are extremely against it happening UNKNOWINGLY.

Two; Non-destructive testing (x-ray) is how they could determine whether all bats are legal prior to the batter stepping to the plate...perhaps an x-ray machine located near each dugout with some league "official" verifying.

Personally, I think if the bat's exterior is made of wood it's ok, regardless of the type of wood or what core it might possess.

Of all the programs, interviews, etc. broadcasted regarding this matter...NO ONE has mentioned that the probability of Sosa grabbing the WRONG/ILLEGAL bat UNKNOWINGLY was 1 out of 77 !

Extremely unlikely or unlucky ?

Think about it.
