McCain softening on sporting life? Good news on two fronts for Las Vegas gambling. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz), who has in the past lashed out at legal Nevada sports betting, may be softening his position to some degree. McCain, in an interview last weekend on ESPN radio, admitted that his anti-gambling position on amateur athletics is based upon his respect and trust for college coaches.

“I am no expert on gambling, and in fact I have contributed to the Las Vegas economy,” McCain said, “I have a great respect for people such as Tom Osborne and Joe Paterno, who are opposed to any type of wagering on college sports and the temptation it offers to kids.”

McCain added that the Vegas lobby remains strong and would probably be able to kill the latest Osborne-led measure to eliminate gambling on college sports.

“Las Vegas can live without betting on college sports,” McCain said. “However, there’s no doubt Vegas does a lot of business on college football and March Madness.”
