Just received an E- Mail from Carib about their recent tech problems. Carib and Casa Blanca have recently experienced similar problems, and today Gamblers Avenue and Oddsandends seem to be. I hope all the Books and watchdogs can band together and help catch these A-Holes.

Dear Concerned Customer,
We would like to inform you that at this time that our website is again 100% functional. As of Friday, May 23, 2003 our Internet Service Provider was a victim of Cyber Terrorism and was under attack. This was done in an attempt to extort money from our company. Since last week many other sportsbooks have also fallen victim to this campaign.
We would like to reassure you that every preventative measure is being taken to avoid this from reoccurring. We ask that if you are ever experiencing difficulties accessing our website that you contact us @ 1-800-WIN-A LOT as we are still able to offer our phone services to assist you in making deposits and placing your wagers
If you are still unable to access our website, kindly give us a call immediately @ 1-800-WIN-A LOT.

Red007,

If you live in Ohio, go visit Al R. He could make it stop, I am sure (for a small fee this time....and the next time....and the time after that).

NOTE TO BOOKS: Have a firewall and have someone who knows how to use it. These denial of service attacks can be stopped if you have someone on staff who knows how to identify the IP address(es) of who is doing it.

Any company who publicly blames a hacker needs a big lesson in public relations. Even if that cyberterrorism excuse is true, which I doubt it is, it's the last thing you should tell your customers. It doesn't make them feel better, it makes them lose faith. Take responsibility for your IT department's incompetence, fix it, and move on.

Isn't it a coincidence that the Rx was hacked recently and then sportsbooks were hacked after that?

Maybe the Rx was hacked by a smartass at a sportsbook that doesn't advertise here and once he found out he was able to hack in here he went on to hack some of the competing sportsbooks?

Just a thought...

it's more than likely the US Government involved. If they can't get their share they get rather upset.

IB, no one has been "hacked" that I know of.

These "attacks" are simply flooding the website with so much traffic, everything comes to a stop. All of the bandwidth is plugged up, but nothing has been hacked (that I've heard of).

I think we're on a dangerously slippery slope here labeling anyone that disrupts a business a "terrorist." How long will it be before American born citizens who protest semi-peacefully are stripped of their rights, thrown in a federal detention center, held indefinitely, given secret trials without a lawyer, etc.? It makes me sick how the Bush administration and the corporate media has pulled the wool over everyone's eyes.

It's not as bad as it seems, IP addresses to the "culprits" have been traced and situation is being taken care of through the appropriate channels. Websites for all involved should be taken care of soon. Good luck to all.

It could get worse, recently in Oregon the city council wanted to give Iraq War protestors 10 years minimum for disrupting traffic. Wanted to label them "terrorists" They said they needed a "tool" to fix the problem the protestors had created. Well, taking aways their Constitutional rights is a pretty good tool, if you're a fascist nazi.

Tracking DOS attacks isn't exactly trivial ...
non-forwarding proxies in 3rd World Countries can be used to "attack" the the target.

I'm not sure the Rwuandan gov't cares about a proxy server under there jurisdiction bringing down Carib ... they have a few more important things to be concerned with - like FOOD
