Its true...

Check out the Yankees roster for example , I don`t know what the statistics are but look around ....The Black baseball player is either being sqeezed out or inner-city trends are too blame...Not to mention international players have taken up some of the spots...

My theory, Racism running rampant as usual, any marginal player that is white will win that role over a marginal black player...

Even though I`m a black , I`m not crying here, there is no doubt its becoming more and more of a white man game..

Read what I said, THE MARGINAL PLAYERS ARE ALL WHITE GUYS!

Anaheim Angels roster is basically all WHITE...

I said all the MARGINAL players are white meaning the RESERVES!

I never said the black players are better

Anaheim Angels have one black player thats an impact player...Go back say mid 80`s or 70`s look at the roster...Black baseball players are dying out....True, you still have great black players, many! But not as many on each roster...

I think that a good many of the talented Black ballplayers are going to play in Africa. As everyone is well aware... there are many great, well organized leagues out there. Ballplayers are making fortunes. So why wouldn't they go? I'm just surprised there are no, and I mean NO white ball players going to play there. Must be racism.

Of course, Journeyman, I'm being VERY SARCASTIC. I went to a Chicago Bulls game about a year ago. What I noticed was that ther were virtually no black males there with children. As a matter of fact, about 95% of the audience was white. I think this observation would be consistent with every sporting event. Black males are usually the majority as players (more than 50% in baseball), yet black males don't support teams (baseball, football, basketball, hockey) with their dollars. So I don't think you have anything to complain about Journeyman. If black athletes had to depend on black dollars to earn their paychecks, well, suffice it to say, they wouldn't be living in any mansions.

Can anyone say 'GIFT'?

sue, i do not support journey's view but your example is not valid. most black folks who live in chicago cannot afford tix to a bulls game. for a man to bring his wife, two kids to a game is about $300.

please people its merely an observation!

I`m as White as they come...I don`t like seeing the whole NBA black...I don`t like seeing NO NFL RUNNING BACKS! Its just an observation...

Are you counting foriegn nationality players such as Bernie Williams as being in that 50%?

I have a hard time believing AFRO AMERICAN players make up 50 % of MLB.

i'm as white as gary busse...i just like the name blue edwards. if there are less black baseball players today than 20 years ago, it has nothing to do with racism. i am so sick of hearing about racism in cases where it clearly does not exist. all this does is diminish true cases of racism.

maybe more black kids stopped playing baseball in the 80's and we are seeing the results today...i don't know.

Your wrong Blue...look at all the fringe players...show me the stats on the 23rd 24th 25th players in the game...I guarantee its 70 % white...The last thing I wanted to do here was defend the black race...Its just fact..

I just put all the rosters in the JOURNEYGRINDER and it comes out 74.25 % White fringe players

Preface: I really have no side in this discussion. I really have no idea if there have been more black guys since 1996 but it seems to me there are more Hispanics, and of course more Asians.

I found these stats on Usenet and though they would be interesting, although a bit old as they were posted in 1996.

so, you think that the gms and/or managers of major league baseball teams are making conscious decisions to give roster spots on major league teams based on skin-color? i don't know much about anything but, one thing i know is that businessmen are motivated by $$$, not race.

major league baseball (which is a business) makes roster decisions based on talent and salary...period. anyone who says different has an axe to grind.

to me, its like all the female journalists coming out and saying "see annika showed all you shovenist men that she can play with you. you were hoping she'd fall flat on her face but she showed you!". now, did some men want her to fail miserably...i'm sure they did. was it the majority - i doubt it. i know i wanted her to make the cut. most guys i talked to about it were either pulling for her or didn't care.

there's just no way anyone can convince me the we are "keeping the black man down" in professional sports in this country. it just ain't so.
