Give me a break. 102 for Culpepper??

-----------------------------------

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -- Daunte Culpepper signed a $102 million contract extension with the Minnesota Vikings on Friday, becoming one of the NFL's highest-paid players.

The 10-year deal includes a $16 million signing bonus. The 26-year-old quarterback had one year left on the deal he signed after the Vikings drafted him with the 11th overall pick out of Central Florida in 1999.

The total potential value would be the third highest in NFL history behind Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb ($115 million) and Buffalo quarterback Drew Bledsoe ($103 million).

``Now we can move forward,'' Culpepper said, all smiles at a news conference following a minicamp practice. ``I'm glad it got done today ... I feel in my heart that we have the team that can win a championship.''

Culpepper became a starter in 2000, making the Pro Bowl and leading Minnesota to the NFC championship game.

But he struggled through much of last year, leading the league with 32 turnovers (23 interceptions). He was benched in favor of backup Todd Bouman for the fourth quarter of the Vikings' loss to the New York Giants on Nov. 10 before returning to the lineup the next week and leading the team to three straight victories to end the season.

Culpepper threw for four touchdowns and ran for three more in those last three games. He finished the season 333-of-549 (60.7 percent) for 3,853 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also rushed for 609 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Culpepper's 10,402 career yards passing rank fourth on the team's all-time list, and he and Randy Moss already have hooked up for 28 touchdowns -- the most by a Vikings duo.

``It's a great, great day for the Vikings organization,'' coach Mike Tice said.

Owner Red McCombs has approved long-term extensions for Moss, center Matt Birk and offensive guard Chris Liwienski over the past two years -- helping secure much of the foundation of one of the league's best offenses.

Moss got an eight-year deal worth $75 million in July 2001, and now the Vikings have two of the six highest-paid players in the league.

Though an agreement didn't appear to be close initially, the Vikings wanted to get the deal taken care of sooner rather than later.

``We're looking forward to several years of Daunte,'' McCombs said. ``This is just another statement by the Vikings as to what we think of having this opportunity to have this guy in the most important position by far on any NFL team.''

This is very strange...What has this loser done? He can`t even find Moss wide open? This is as bad a contract as I`ve ever seen...Minnesota resembling Cincy lately...

I disagree. Look at his numbers in 2000 when he had a GOOD team to play with. He threw for 33 td's and only threw 16 int's. He also ran in another 7 td's for a total of 40 td's. His passer rating was 98.0 that year. The last two years their team has been terrible. Over the last six weeks of the season last year, he started working with their offensive coordinator instead of the quarterback's coach, and his numbers started to improve again. This offense is very, very good and he will have a HUGE year this year.

I always say this so you understand my perspective. I bleed Green & Gold and despise the Queens but I think he has a huge year this year and in the future, provided his team is good.

A few years ago they were saying Favre was washed up too because their team wasn't very good and his numbers were slacking. When Culpepper and the Vikings get the ball at the 15 yard line or closer, it is very tough to stop them from scoring td's because he is such a threat to run the ball that team's have a tough time defending their offense.

We will just have to agree to disagree for now but bring this thread up at the end of the year and I will either tell you I told you so or I will admit I made a mistake. I think it will be the former, however.

This is football folks ! if you think he will see 102 million you're crazy. same as the 10 year contract brett favre recently signed.. meaningless. only 16 of that 102 mil is gauranteed. this will keep this stiff happy and working hard til they bring in who they really want and cut him.

Judge:

Sure, Culpepper has talent, so does the worst acitve player in the NFL.

I think the Vikings owner should go back to selling cars.

I think the money aspect has to be put aside.

Because:

A) In the NFL, they can cut you tomorrow and they will only be liable for the bonus.

B) Rarely is anyone ever worth what they pay them. But, in five years, players may be making $200 million and this will seem like a good thing. He could also be terrible and be grossly over paid. But if you look at most players salaries, they are over paid in realtionship to their production.

The only question is really is it worth it to keep him or not and I think it is.

I do find it kind of ironic that McCombs needs a new stadium because they can't make enough money and compete (they all make money in the NFL because the sport is do damn good) but can pay someone $100 million dollars. Hmmm, must not be doing too badly with the team.

I dont understand this deal for the life of me..The kid is good, but 102 million i feel to be quite excessive..Elway, Marino, Montana, Aikman, they must be hysterical..Warriors who in their 5th years were proven commodities..Culpepper had the largest QB turnover ratio last year..Minn..we wish you luck in the near future..You will need it..

You guys must have been watching different games than I have watched.

Let's take a look at two other qb's that most people would say have been pretty good qb's in their careers - Favre and Elway and compare them with Culpepper.

These are each qb's stats after their first three seasons.

G COM PCT YDS TD INT TD/INT RATIO RUSH YDS RUSH TD'S
FAVRE 47 62.4% 10412 70 51 1.37 616 4
ELWAY 42 53.4% 8152 47 52 0.90 636 2
CULPEPPER 44 62.3% 10402 65 52 1.25 1501 22

And remember, Culpepper's teams have been terrible compared to Favre's and Elway's teams who were 26-22 (Favre) and 33-15 (Elway) while Culpepper's teams were 22-26. And, remember, when Culpepper had a good team his first year he had outstanding numbers - 33-16 td/int ratio and rushed for 7 td's and had a qb rating of 98.0.

And let's not forget Favre had pretty average years in '99 and '00 when the Packers were basically a .500 team, having a 42-39 td/int ratio, completing just about 57.5% of his passes and having a qb rating of about 75, which is basically what Culpepper has done the past two years on much worse teams.
