A lot of -300, -400, -340's compared to anytime else during the season....

These same matchups would have been -180 or -220's earlier..I have no doubt about that.

Is it because they know the teams still fighting for playoff spots will do whatever it takes to win against teams that have already packed it in?

It was mentioned on the sportswireonline morning radio program that when the good teams are running off 8, 9, 11 game winning streak like Astros, Cards, Boston, Braves have been doing, -200 to - 300 is a bargain. Also, you must remember that teams like Tampa Bay and other teams going nowhere are playing a lot of call ups while the teams fighting for wild cards and playoffs position are going with their best vets. I have been doing very well with giving up the - 1 1/2 runs on teams like Boston, Angels, and Cards! Then good teams are winning right now and why throw away your $$ on bad teams.Go with the flow is my theory

Huh. Could have swore I won with Colorado +185, Kansas City +222, and Montreal +290. Seems to be a lot of value in the call ups that are trying to make an impression on their club.

Simple supply and demand. With bettors more focused on football, it becomes easy just to lay some big wood on a team that appears to be in a no-lose situation if you don't put in the time to keep studying the matchups. On the flip side, I do know that a lot of strong baseball bettors just jump ship at this time of year and focus on football or a vacation. Even not so strong bettors who happened to get lucky and are ahead right now work to protect their profits.

What is left is generally a lot of stuck people and stuck people generally will do desperate things. So the supply and demand curve finds most people are betting the same sides and the books aren't finding the value bettors to take back the other side. Ask an uniformed player to bet on a team that has nothing to play for? Good luck.

In my experience this has been an EXTREMELY lucrative time of the year to be either a book or a patient bettor. Books don't give much thought to the numbers and don't move them much since the bet volumes are way down. They just put up big numbers and force the desperate crowd to lay too much chalk. And if you are a patient bettor not only can you pick up this good value, but also the slow book moves means plenty of weak numbers get left on the board until the betting action forces them to move. The managers are too busy paying attention to football to worry about moving baseball numbers.
