I think it's because of the nicotine. I started chewing because of the buzz it gave me. By the time it no longer gives you a buzz, you're hooked.

Illini is correct. When 1st starting, one gets a little head buzz and thereafter the buzz leaves but the addiction remains.

I did not start smoking until after I graduated from College. I found that the High very relaxing and affordable. This was back in the summer of 86..back then it was cheap and everywhere. I started to smoke after I got home from work, then before I went to bed...then soon found that I was waking up in the middle of the night to take a puff. As the years passed away and my tolerance level increased, I found that my habit became more expensive. Now in my mid 30's and thanks to more border control, I have been forced to buy a more expensive and more potent brand called Hydro..... and this is my story....

Very Sad 2.5 Million Die A Year From Smoking

Smoking Kills

Every year, more then 400,000 American deaths are attributed to smoking. It’s banned in restaurants, workplaces and other public areas. It’s illegal for cigarettes to be sold to anyone under 18. Yet even with all the loss of customers by death, tobacco companies still manage to make a profit.

How do they do it? There are numerous laws against smoking. In 1998, a law passed that made it illegal to smoke in bars. An internal Philip Morris document states, "[The] financial impact of smoking bans will be tremendous - three to five fewer cigarettes per day per smoker will reduce annual manufacturer profits a billion dollars plus per year." In an effort to keep their customers smoking, the companies trick the public with lies and loopholes. Their goal is to slow the antismoking movement and keep people smoking—to get more profits.

What about the health of non-smokers? Reports from 1993 state second-hand smoke causes lung cancer and respiratory diseases. The same findings have been concluded by a hundred other major studies, and still the tobacco industry says the results are flawed.

A Philip Morris inside report from 1987 discussed how anti-smoking movements and price increases prevented 600,000 teens from taking up smoking. In 1979, a memo noted that “Marlboro dominates in the 17 and younger age category…” and in ’78 “…the base of our business is the high school student…”. Even with these companies’ lies and tricks to get around antismoking laws, they still try to sell their products to children. Who could blame them, considering their product kills more than 2,000 of their American customers a day? They need to replace these consumers quickly, and what easier way to do so than convince impressionable teens that smoking is the ‘cool’ thing to do? Hey, it keeps the profits coming!

Antismoking movements are just beginning to be heard. With a product that kills more Americans than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, murders, suicides, illegal drugs, and fires combined, no law can be too strict. So, when you see a tobacco ad, are offered a cigarette, or have the choice whether or not to smoke, remember that tobacco companies are greedy money-grubbers. No matter who you are, you’re just another dollar sign in the eyes of Philip Morris.

Smoking Kills is for the nonsmokers of the internet. We know the effects of smoking, and we're smart enough to stay away. Are you one of us?

Sherman,

That, and peer pressure, and a way to rebel. I wish I'd never have started. It's a bitch trying to quit.

Sherman is right. I started smoking in my high school senior year. Had to sneak em back in those days. By the time I was in college totally hooked and went from less than a pack a dy to 3 plus packs a day. Coughing, etc. Didn't matter. Need the nicition. 3 years ago--I quit the filthy habit and have severe emphaysema. Not fun when you have trouble getting your breathe.
My dad smoked--but would have hated it if he knew I did it.
Today, we are seeing more and more places where you can not smoke. I don't know what the answer is, but my heart goes out to anyone trying to quit.

I quit 5 years ago. Only recently have the cravings stopped. I was near someone smoking a Marlboro light the other day and it brought back a flood of memories for me, but not enough to get me started again

Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things I've ever done

Personally I don't smoke cigs but I do smoke a little marijuana here and there. Usually on the weekend, like now. It's going to be Friday night and I feel all right. Prior is pitching right now in the South Side. Go CUBS!

I first started smoking when I was 2 years old. My dad used to put me in a dress and walk me around town. People would give him their loose change just to see the "smoking pre-school boy in a dress."

Unfortunately smoking cigs was just a gateway drug and led to my addiction to crack cocaine, gambling, and farm animal porn.

I can see why someone would try it once. But I don't see how they can go from the first one to the second one. Coughing and eyes watering was not an incentive to go to the second.

I have friends who started when they were in their late 30's. With all of the info on the detriments out there, I can understand people who are uninformed or are teenagers trying to be cool starting. However, someone in their late 30's starting? That is pretty bad.

How much smoking is "alot"?
Would a pack a week be considered alot?
I have been smoking a pack a week for about 10 years now. Sometimes a pack lasts me 2 weeks, sometimes, when in vegas...2 days.

Smoking to me is disgusting.
It stinks.
It is expensive.
And it can kill you.
I could never be with a man that smokes those nasty things.
