We all hear about former athletes who gamble on games, like barkley and rodman. What about active athletes? How prevelant do you guys think it is? I remember something about Jagr owing a offshore book some money. Also if the Athlete does not bet on his own sports, should that make it alright?

Phil Michelson will make his yearly future bet in Vegas soon on the NFL.

Last year, he bit the dust with the Buffalo Bills.

Phil does more than just make futures bets... I heard last year he was into them for about 7 figures at one time.

I forgot about Phil. Would people care if they found out Phil bet on himself to win a tourney? I mean it happens in boxing all the time. Why is OK for a boxer to bet on himself to win, but a baseball player, or any team sport for that matter, gets in trouble when it he does it.

The reason I started this thread was to see how people felt about this issue, because there is gonna be a pretty major story breaking soon about a current player who was a client of that sports service down here in fort myers that was recently busted. If he did not bet on his own sport, is there anything wrong with him betting heavily on other sports with offshore and/or local books?

I think in an individual sport (i.e. boxing, golf, tennis) it should be OK to bet on yourself to win. But only on yourself to win. I mean, the idea is for the player to try to win so I don't see how betting on himself should effect how he should play. Now if a golfer bet on himself in a player matchup...that's a different story. That could change his strategy and alter his normal course of play.

I don't know that I'm comfortable with that. I mean, that's a lot of added pressure and could significantly affect the person competing. They would be sweating as much as we do.

ace, tough call. Definitely no on any kind of spread betting. As for betting on your team to win the individual contest I'm having a hard time coming up with a reason not to. Definitely a manager cannot, because he could theortecially sacrifice one game for another. As for a player, I'm not sure. I'm not comfortable with it, but I'm not quite sure why.

About 25% of the Pga tour bets thousands a week, on own golf and other sports. Ernie Els big soccer bettor. John Jacobs was a horse degenerate for years and screwed up his career doing it.

Andre Agassi one of the biggest football bettors out their
Yevgeny Kafelnikov a scrath golfer bets thousands on course is compulsive gambler that lost his marraige and bankroll over it.

There is about 10-15 MLB umpires that bet on the MLB on a daily basis, doesnt mean they make bad calls, just fighting the boredom.

Jerry Buss very big sports bettor
Micheal Jordan very big bettor
Barkley, sharp bettor.

That is perhaps the nuttiest statement uttered this year at the RX. It doesn't even necessitate a rebuttal.

I'd like to know where you get your MLB umpire info from. I went to Professional Umpiring School, and it is a job that is taken very seriously. Umpires compete on every pitch with themselves and take a lot of pride in their work. I would say that's total and complete bullshit, unless you can't provide sources.

For the record, I no longer umpire, and haven't for 3 years. And I only did college baseball, where there are no betting lines. And I just started betting a little over a year ago. Just so nobody is confused.

D2bets,

How many nba players dove for a looseball this year? I did not not see one case of a nba player diving for a ball.

What a lot of you squares dont realize is MOST people dont gamble to make MONEY. They do it for the ACTION. So yes there has been some ncaa hoop refs that have bet maybe 20 games they ref in, and call them like they see them and will go 9-11 ats in those games.

Also when you play the game of GOLF, if you have any character at all, you call penaltys against yourself, and dont cheat by advancing the ball.

People have a misconception of what a thief is now a days. People think a thielf is someone who breaks into cars and steals your cd's, but a thief is also people like your mommy and daddy that have been cheating the irs by fudging on their taxes the last 30 years.

Not sure what it has to do with the issue, but the answer is A LOT. If you never say an NBA diving for the ball then you didn't watch much NBA. BTW, I'm not trying to argue that players give their best all of the time. That's not the issue. The issue is that betting against your team is obviously a conflict of interest. It is truly not even debatable. Any time I spend debating it would a a waste of time.

Not sure if its cause Koby Bryant hates Jackson or Shaq but he should be investigated for NOT SHOOTING in the first halves of certain games!
