Plenty of bettors bet early lines like these. Pros: sharp players are able to spot weak numbers that should move in their favor opening up middle opportunities later. Cons: (especially for post ups) it can tie up money for quite a while.

another con: starting quarterbacks getting hurt in the preseason. Being the lucky s.o.b. that I am, I took both the Falcons AND the Jets before the preseason started, and both their starters got knocked out. luckily the Falcons beat the Cowpukes anyways and I pushed, not counting the juice.
