Are there any good reads on just how to do this...beating video poker regularly?

Fishhead- in all seriousness, why don't you write a book on the subject? If you have that much expertise I think you should put it down on paper Fish...

I haven't had a chance to take a real shot at it yet because I live 220 miles from Reno. The most important thing is that you have to play a massive amount of hands and, quite possibly, suffer some bad short-term losses while waiting for the long-term statistical probabilities to work in your favor. I HAVE noticed that when I do go to Reno that I do much better at it than I used to. Even if you can't make a living at it, the money you spend on these books will be well worth it.

As you know JMAN, I have made a significant amount of money from VP over the years.

For you and others that would be interested learning the game the professional way, I would read everything I could get my hands on authored by Dan Paymar or Bob Dancer.

My top recommendation would be the following......

I understand that one hits a ROYAL FLUSH approximately every 40,000 hands, and if that is correct, how many ROYAL'S have you hit FISH?

that depends on the game, there are some VP games where you can expect to hit 1 in 400K hands
quote:
Originally posted by Journeyman:

Give or take a few hundred here and there, for the majority of full-pay VP games 40,000 is about the correct figure, you are correct sir.

How many have I hit?

No exact figure, but a rough estimate may be around 300 or so.........now remember, alot of those have come on triple-play, five-play, or ten-play machines where one can play 3, 5, or 10 hands at once..........still a *hitload however you want to look at it. Lots of hours played in the trenches of the video poker world.

FISH

One question to which I have never been able to find a consisten answer is about bankrolls. Say I'm playing $ 1.00 a pop VP ... what sort of bankroll should I have handy? What about stop loss margin?

That is a very braod question because I would need the type of game and its payback percentage, slot club advantage, promotions, denomination of game, and some other factors.

Although I rarely play dueces wild because it is hard to find in anything higher than quarter machines, here is the RISK OF RUIN for that game at the quarter level and not taking anything else into consideration.

With a bankroll of 4,405, you would have only a 10% chance of RISK OF RUIN.........and with a bankroll of 8,811 one would have only a 1% chance of RISK OF RUIN.

These figures are from VIDEO POKER TIMES.

My biggest downside ever on $1 video poker was around $23,000 or so before I got back to my CAREER HIGH in profits.

This was playing a game that probably averaged less than 101.2% payback overall even counting the cash back from the slot card and other promotions.

This is an online game I've been experimenting with, Jacks or better. I know that online vp games are generally recommended against because of the shit payouts, but the nearest vp game from where I'm sitting is a five-hour drive.

This particular game, as I said, is Jacks or better, bet $1 to $5 per turn, payouts are

1:1 Jacks+
2:1 Two Pair
3:1 three of a kind
4:1 Straight
5:1 Flush
10:1 Full House
20:1 Four of a kind
50:1 Straight Flush

Royal Flush pays 250:1 on $1-$4 bet, and 400:1 on $5.

I'm really just screwing around with it; it's an hideously boring grind that I doubt I'd ever be able to do full time -- and not sure that the money would be there anyway, in an online setting. I'm just curious as to what you think a bankroll should be on such a game, given your expertise.

The game you are playing has a terrible return percentage.......you have no chance.

ps- On your edited post, I accidently hit the edit button instead of the quote button, nothing was edited.

Well, figured as much based on what I've read of online vp vs. offline -- but I actually am net up. Guess I will continue in dilletante mode, because I seriously doubt I will ever have the sort of time it takes to grind out any real money in an offline mode (unless some operator installs a machine in my office for some goddamned reason.)

Fish which games have an above 100% payback?

And how do you find them? And, why do some have an above 100% payback?

The two most NOTABLE games that have 100%+ payback are the full-pay versions of DUECES WILD and DOUBLE BONUS which have a payback of 100.72% and 100.17% respectively with perfect strategy.

The are many other variations that have 100%+ payback, but those would be considered the two most popular.

The advantage for the casino is that they can advertise that they have 100%+ video poker and thus draw many people to their casino.

The casino will not get hurt because only a small minority know perfect stategy.

Depending on time of year, work obligations and personal proclivity I am in either Alabama, Florida (south east), California (Bay Area-ish), or at large abroad. Right now I am in Alabama, and the closest video poker of which I am aware is in Mississippi -- Biloxi is about a five-hour drive from here and I hit it from time to time, pick up a little money sometimes, leave a little sometimes. I've never really tried the vp down there -- just play blackjack, poker, and roulette.
