I know the MLB All Star game is for the fans & the league wants to get them involved as much as possible but the voting goes too far.

I am a Jason Giambi fan but he does NOT deserve a starting spot or spot in general on the team. It is just like M. Piazza getting voted as the starting catcher when he has spent most of his playing time at 1B this season.

It is pathetic that Overbay is not a finalist in the "final" voting that the fans have the opportunity to vote on.

There's always next year, like in 75, 90-93, 99 &

Fan voting is just horrible. It is such a shame for guys that have a great first half and actually earn a spot. You can pretty much pencil in the starters for the All-Star game before the season even starts. It leaves only a couple spots for guys that actually deserve it.

It really is too bad. I understand they want to involve fans more, but letting them vote is a mistake. If they want them to be more involved, LET THEM BET ON THE GAME!

There is a good chance the starting battery for the NL will be Roger Clemons and Mike Piazza. Who woulda thunk it?

No doubt, Overbay is having a great season. But if you include Overbay on the team, you have to dump one of the following:

Pujols
Sean Casey
Todd Helton
Jim Thome

Everybody loves to complain about who deserves to be on the All-Star team. Everybody wants to include every player who is hitting at least .330, or has 20 homers, etc. But it seems that 90% of the nay-sayers seem to forget that you need to REMOVE a player from the All-Star team in order to add a guy like Overbay. Does anybody really think Overbay should be on the All-Star team instead of Jim Thome?

The Funky Monkey...

Great point about needing to remove someone to add a player.

Overbay: .341 9hr 61rbi 41r
Helton: .352 15hr 53rbi 60r
Pujols: .304 21hr 57rbi 69r
Casey: .352 15hr 54rbi 55r
Thome: .298 27hr 58rbi 54r

I don't think Overbay deserves it this year simply because of the other players at his position. But I do still have to agree that fans are not the best to judge who should be on the roster.

As with most things in life, the All-Star selection process is damned if you do, damned if you don't.

If the managers/players got to pick 100% of the roster, people would complain when a guy like Cal Ripken (during one of his bad years) didn't make the All-Star team. "How can you not include Cal Ripken? Who cares if he is hitting .254? He is a legend!"

But if the fans pick 100% of the players, people complain when Overbay (and other small-market players) don't make the team.

All things considered, I think the current selection system is a good compromise. Fans get to vote for the starters, they get to vote for the players they really want to see. Then the managers get the opportunity to fill in the gaps with players based on stats, performance, etc.

Is it perfect? Nope. But is anything perfect? Nope.

Complaining about fan voting is ridiculous. Who really cares who plays or starts in this exhibition other than the players and their bonus clauses? I rarely even watch the game, usually it gets summed up in two or three good highlights you can catch on the news.

AP source: Red Sox sign first baseman Overbay
By JIMMY GOLEN
AP Sports Writer / February 1, 2013

BOSTON (AP) — An official with knowledge of the deal says the Boston Red Sox have signed first baseman Lyle Overbay to a minor league contract.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced.

If he makes the Boston roster out of spring training, Overbay would share duties with Mike Napoli.

Overbay is a career .270 hitter with 133 homers and 581 RBIs in a 12-year career with the Blue Jays, Braves, Brewers, Diamondbacks and Pirates.
