Aren't all these websites selling picks technically illegal? Or are they fine as long as they use the whole "this info is for entertainment purposes only" line.

I do not see what law someone would be breaking just by giving advice on games.

Many people buy these picks and bet the games legally in Vegas.

They use the old "for recreational use only" disclaimer.

I see. I remember people telling touts that they were gonna call the feds on them when they called so I kinda figured it was illegal. I guess if you classify the service as information for entertainment purposes you can bilk people out of money. Kinda sad but I guess there are worse scams out there.

Yeah, I guess that's it. The wording makes it so clear that the information is for gambling purposes though. Suckers beware I suppose.

Lately I read somewhere(?) about some people arrested for "guaranteeing" a win. Don`t recall the specifics, anyone else see this?

Actually 5-10% of the handicappers out there are good and reputable. Some of these handicappers spend hours studying the matchups and have a keen eye for picking a lot more winners than losers. Look out for the guys who have made up names like Harvey Gold or have infomertials on T.V. like wayne Root. Good luck!

Yeah but GOD FORBID if you claim to have inside info on a game, there are morons who would rather bash you out of jealousy than accept the info and make money!! If you lose look out for certain people!!

Touting is illegal, if done in the US.

The Interstate Wire Act makes it a felony to transmit "gambling information" via telephones or internet. I suppose touts have the defense that their picks are useless, and are therefore not information.

If it is illegal how does Jim Fiest and so forth (touts) stay in business? My understanding is if your selling picks and your not claiming you have inside (FALSE) info and not receiving kickbacks for referrals to sportsbooks you are fine. Correct?

Sports is the key word I would assume. Rather then gambling info.

My 2 cents:

The big Tout services give out winners/losers etc. and refer to lines offered by legal gaming operations. They dont set the lines. The ones that say "go for the over at 17" if you see it a book, are contributing to the gaming transaction if they received funds for the pick. Some have been arrested, but mainly for working for a book on setting lines with tout customers on the side.

The services on the net, most of them are wanna "B" bookies that lose allot of their money gambling. Some of them that take offshore books for advertisers and make money on banner clicks and sing up etc. are operating on thin ice over proceeds of crime.

I think the law is in USA and Finland same in this case:

Giving out picks isn't illegal, but recommending sportsbooks via tout service is illegal.

You can release your percentages or opinions, and get paid for it. But you can't recommend your customers to send money to some foreing sportsbook.

Interesting topic...

But how could it be illegal for Feist and his goons to be selling picks in Vegas? That wouldn't make much since to me. They live in an area that has sportsbooks and casinos everywhere. Why can't they give information there?
