Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Smarty Jones will make his next start in the Pennsylvania Derby on September 6 at his home track of Philadelphia Park.
Trainer John Servis said his three-year-old colt has been walking and jogging since coming up short of the Triple Crown with a second-place finish to Birdstone at the Belmont Stakes on June 5.
"He's been doing great," Servis said. "He's right on target for the Pennsylvania Derby."
The Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby is the top race at Philadelphia Park.
Smarty Jones has won eight of his nine career starts and has earned more than $7.5 million for owners Pat and Roy Chapman. The Chapmans also have a deal in place for the Pennsylvania-bred to stand stud at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky upon retirement.
According to Servis, Smarty Jones will likely make two starts before the Breeders' Cup Classic in late October. After the Pennsylvania Derby, the next likely start for the colt will be in late September at either the Pegasus Stakes at the Meadowlands or the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs.
