Why Do We Have So Many More Lurkers Than Posters?

I have often wondered what causes most people to read the responses on our forums, but not post...

I remember reading that many of you lurked for a LONG TIME before posting...

What's the reason?

Maybe a lurker can even come in this thread and explain?

Just curious...

Thanks,

The Club of the Obsessed and Banned probably outnumber us that are registered Shrink..... thus, they appear as lurkers.....

I think because while lurking they see what happens to new posters. As soon as they make a post they are called ghosts or schills. Also many times their posts get no replies because nobody is familiar with the names.

It is better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.

Slim,

You bring up an excellent point regarding banning, which had been discussed countless times...

I know if we allowed everything to stay and did no banning, this place would be chaotic...

I do think out mods do an outstanding job but where to draw the lines is very very difficult...

There are many lurkers here that are SUPREME wiseguys.

Many feel they do not need to share any information with anybody, and quite frankly, why should they?

I cant blame them.

But by lurking, even a supreme wiseguy will stumble across something here at the RX to make them a more profitable gambler.

I have to agree about the bashing and getting called a shill...you see too many people get slammed in here for sharing their opinion.

It is a pretty ruthless crowd in here and it isn't for some people.

But nontheless, a great place for info if you lurk and find credible people posting credible info.

Shrink, without a doubt the group of mods here do an outstanding job. Those who love to criticize should take the job for a month and see if they can handle the ruthless crowds

About slamming people that have one post....that is not usually the case, if however, you decide to cry foul, bash someone, or say X book is the best in the world, what do you expect, of course you're going to get slammed for doing it....

that and ghosts are about as popular here as they are in an Edgar Allan Poe story....

Lets get Rx or a sportsbook to offer a free $25 (one winner a week random draw) for a new poster, unique IP address that posts 20 or more times in a week. LEts get some fresh blood and see who is out there. Its a slow time of year so lets do it. Ill even sponsor the first $25 from my own account how is that?

It cant be customer service because the new mods are much much better than the old group.

well if we get 40 new posters a week at 20 posts (there are hundreds of lurkers) (Say 1/2 are real and 1/2 are scamming) we still get 20 new posters who might turn into the next SLIM.

Seems healty to do for a few weeks until football anyway.

Im serious I will put the first $25 up no problem if Rx continues it for a month or so.

Shrink,
I have always wondered about the corollary, ie. why do so many people post here as opposed to lurking? Seriously, >90% of the posts are worthless/superfluous/unnecessary/redundant, and these posters would do us all a favor by lurking rather than posting. (I love EXILARCH's post..."It is better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.")
I am the classic lurker; I have visited this site at least 10X more just to read the posts without posting myself. I'm posting more now just in anticipation of meeting some posters at the RX Vegas Bash(I was out of town last year).

I was lurking for over two years before registering. The site provides valuable information on a variety of matters with no need to become a member. Finally registered because I felt the desire to share information.

That being said, believe that those that decide not to become members are more comfortable viewing then writing. Simply different personality traits. Each of us communicate in our own way. Many are members, but rarely post. Others of us post a great deal without reservation. It's simply who we are and how we express ourselves or choose not too do so in a public forum.

I guess I would be classified as a lurker. I work a lot of hours. My time is very valuable. It takes time to read every topic and then reply in a discussion format which means checking back for responses. Some discussions go on and on without really saying much.

I look at the topics that might be important to me. I do this once a day. That's all I have time for.
