Horn's Sophomore QB Vince Young (6-5, 225) as a red shirt freshman became the first Longhorn to throw for 1,000 yards and rush for 900, 100 yds short of becoming the third freshman in NCAA history to pass and run for 1,000 yds in a season.

Texas also may have a bit of a two QB situation, a team killer imo. Sr. backup Chance Mock has thrown for 1,534 yards and 17 touchdowns, ninth best on the UT all-time list.

"Couldn't win the big game" Simms messed up Major's good run.

Heisman picks?

Mike Williams seems like the obvious choice right now.

Maybe the Ok QB again?

Phil Steele's pick of Timmy Chang seemed to come from nowhere, but makes some sense. That guy reminds me of Ty Detmer, can't throw the ball with a spiral more than 20 yards but someone is always open for him.

Chang is gonna put up freak numbers, but the Horns spread the ball around their talent too much for their hyped player du jour to win it?

The Zone preached Roy Williams all last year, then when OU beats Texas seemingly every year, any of their candidates is usually out of the running with the national public, especially with OU having a player in the running..it's almost an elimination game in perception.

Texas Tech's QB position provides a nice darkhorse of late, and may cash one year soon?

UF's Leak is gonna have to chuck it to win, yet has all new protection, but the Gators look to be giving up some points this fall, should be a legit darkhorse.

Rix and Berlin play for giants, but don't have much favor with writers, or even fans of their own programs?

Leinhart if leads USC to perfect season behind new line..will be right there too.

OU's White seems a possible back-to-backer, as he appears headed to an Archie Griffin-esque NFL career.

Total crapshoot, but RBs are starting to slide in stature..would look for QB or a WR?

Leinart's probably the favorite if Williams is around.

Timmy Chang wasn't even the best QB in Hawaii last year. June Jones'll give him a shot though I guess.

I agree!

Also agree, can you guys imagine what a real QB could do with that system? Its basically Andre Ware or David Kilngler all over again out there right now, fake stats if i ever saw them.

Texas Sr. RB Cedric Benson is the only NCAA Division I-A running back that has rushed for 1,000 yards the past three seasons. Benson is the nation's top returning rusher (3,706 yards) and the NCAA leading returnee in rushing TDs (45)

vegas, don't you think Selvin's touches may cut into Benson's numbers, plus Vincent's tuck-and-runs indirectly cut into the Pass-Run ratios?

Texas has been so stud-loaded offensively the past 5 years it almost prevents them from going to any one bread-and-butter play..ala Rickey years?

Good points HS, but Benson is a true Heisman candidate going in. Best of luck.

Btw, much like CC standing in a driving rain storm, trying his best to convince us he's not getting wet, I have no bias in pulling for these Texas players.

Matt Leinart

USC's offense is designed at a professional level under the direction of Norm Chow. Leinart's numbers were outstanding last year and should only get better this year, barring injury. If Williams is allowed to return, that's just more gravy. USC is justly projected as a possible National Champion contender and thus will get a great deal of national attention. If the Trojans go either undefeated or even lose one game, Leinart will be in the media eye all year long. If he improves on last year, someone will have to have any exceptional year from a national contender to beat him out of the Heisman.

but look out for T.A.Mclendon,RB for NC STATE.If(which is a huge "if")he can stay healthy,I really believe he will put up unbelievable numbers this year. With Rivers gone he will get even more carries and if the new QB can half way keep the DB's honest,T.A. will be awesome!

My shocker special is Aaron Rodgers as he leads Cal to an undefeated season passing for well over 3000 yards. They have an easy schedule with only SC being roadblock. Their running game figures to be weaker this year so I think Tedford really puts the ball in the air this time around. They had a bunch of tough losses last year, could have easily been 9-3 or 10-2. And they beat SC last year and should have beaten them the year before in LA. I think this is the team that everyone overlooks and will be very surprised by.

Good points. Cal has not been overlooked however. They have been projected in the Top 15. In some circles they have been projected as the most likely representative for the Pac 10 in the Rose Bowl should USC make it to the Orange Bowl. Agree, they have an easy schedule, as does USC, but they play on the road versus the Trojans. I'm a Cal alum, and would like nothing better then to see the Bears win the Pac 10. Rodgers should have an outstanding season, but the running game will not be under utilized. Tedford will try to balance the Bear attack. Last, with most likely only regional telecast of the Cal games, the coverage of Rodgers will make it more difficult for him to win the trophy. That being said, wouldn't mind seeing that you're on the money with this one.

OldmanTed,

Have some faith! Everyone just writes that SC game off as a loss, but no one has been close to SC in recent years except Cal. They should be on a two-game winning streak, the win last year was completely deserved and they should have won the year before. I think the offseason made them better with Rodgers being so young and coming out of JC, the spring football will do wonders for him and his grasp of the offense. I think SC lost an amazing array of talent and probably will be a little less talented this year especially on the OL which is so important to a quick-pass team. Normally with all that they bring in shouldn't be much of a problem, but I think their coach is a joke. If anyone can blow that situation it is him. I think Cal has a great coach that has brought on a lot of confidence and will no doubt feel they can beat SC in any stadium. Other than that they might face on tough game so undefeated is certainly not out of reach.

Vincent Young has no chance. He can't read defenses at all and runs 50% of the time he drops back. Oklahoma wil destroy this kid every time he lines up against them.
