Not mentioning any book names here, i just want to know if what happened is normal?

Hand is dealt, dealer has Ace showing, player has 10.....player buys insurance....instead of checking for the blackjack as most sites do, the hand continues....So player assumes dealer must not have blackjack, and doubles down on the 10, gets 20.....
dealer reveals a blackjack....

Player is paid for the insurance, his original bet, but loses the Double-down part of the wager....

Every time i have ever played, and dealer has a blackjack, you dont lose the double down portion, just your original bet..then if u bought insurance or not, is paid seperate..

But isnt it normal once insurance is bought or declined, for the blackjack to be verified? and is it right to lose the double down portion of the bet, when the hand shouldnt have continued anyway?

I just want to know if i am wrong here....I feel very safe in saying i have never seen this haappen to me before, but want some input from the pros...

Thanks guys...

I have played at casinos where they check after the other hands are played. Not a good placed to place though....moves the odds even more in their favour.

I have also played where they check after and let you play out the hand. But if I DD and dealer has BJ then it only takes my original bet.

Just so that everyone understands, THIS IS NOT RIO I AM TALKING ABOUT...

Had enough of a misunderstanding last time, dont want to give Rio any unwarranted grief, but it IS NOT their casino that did this..

I emailed customer service at the book in question, was told this is NORMAL INDUSTRY PROCEDURE....

quote:
In European blackjack and in many online casinos the dealer does not check for a blackjack after dealing the cards. This is referred to as the "no-peek" rule, because the dealer doesn't peek to see if he has a blackjack. In this case, after the players have played their hands, if the dealer does have a blackjack, then the player loses the full amount bet, including the additional bet if the player doubled or split.

and the effect on your expected return:

quote:
No-peek: ten showing -.10%
No-peek: ace showing -.01%

So, really it only has a minimal effect on the return in the situation you described. Remember that insurance is also a -EV bet

oh yeah. .its normal allright. normal so you normally lose. but I dont think it is good practice to DD against 10 or A even if you have 11, but that it is still wrong.

Would be very nice if their rules stated that, it gives a definite edge to the house...

And have never played in a real casino and seen that happen....

Guess it is a lesson learned....spend money elsewhere...

I played one a few other online casinos and this has happened to me too I guess it's just one of those house rules which the players have to go along with or bet somewhere else

The Bet365 casino's "private play" tables check for blackjack immediately after the deal. I have never played at their multi-player tables so can offer no info. I believe the new CanBet casino uses the same software.

Also, if you do take the new player bonus there (CanBet) be careful to clear it in the multi-player tables. The small print mentions that as one of the conditions.
