The guy is dominating the world cycling scene like the oldest brother in family of 5...making it look so damn easy...

Is he the greatest athlete in the World?

I don't think his accomplishment is getting anywhere NEAR the recognition it deserves...not to mention the man beat Cancer

Its amazing Lander...

I think the lab rats should just be allowed to inject whatever they wish...its too damn complicated to guess anymore, who is doing what, who is using the latest masking agents etc...what will be the latest wonder drug etc...Let the players drop dead at 45, let them hit 600 ft homeruns, let them run the 100 meters in 8 secs

He rides a bike. Granted very fast and better than anyone else not to mention he is in great shape. BUT:

Can he:
Hit a curveball
Catch a football in traffic
Drive the lane and jam over a 7 footer
Drive a golf ball 320 yards (straight)
Do anything at all on skates
Return a 140 MPH serve
Kick a soccer ball past a diving keeper
In other words can Lance do anything atheletic????

I like the guy and root for him but no way he is the greatest athelete in the world.

He is the greatest athlete in the world right now. Even if he is taking EPO, he is still the greatest - the same way that no one can touch B. Bonds in baseball even though he is clearly a huge juicer. Wil, you and I have different definitions of the word athlete. It seems from your list that you feel athleticism is associated with a high level of co-ordination, but I still feel that sprinters, marathoners, cyclists, etc... are athletes. What Armstrong does is the most incredible thing I have seen in sports in a long time...

In any sport where the objective besides overcoming your opponent is also to keep overcoming every generation that came before, as is the case with track and field, will eventually disintagrate into marion jones chemistry freaks. Human performance isn't boundless. And of course what would an 100 m race mean if runners keep performing equally well or worse than those in previous years, with no world records, pretty much pointless. So in essence such sports have as a prerequisite turning their athletes into freaks.

Say what you want about steroids or blood drugs, right now there is no real proof of anything. Cycilists don't need strength as much as they need wind and stamina, just like distance runners. Sure they have leg muscle but nothing way out of proportion. As far as Armstrong's atheletic ability goes imo winning a 3 week bike race 6 times in a row while noteworthy - doesn't compare to feats like Eric Gagane saving 85 straight games, or Jamal Lewis running for 2000 yards in the NFL. Just riding a bike faster than others doesn't compare with competing on a playing surface like a court, diamond, rink, or even a golf course. When Mark Spitz won his 7 Gold Medals was he the greatest athelete alive at that time? He was simply a very fast swimmer. Maybe I'm wrong but persons that excell at sports, or games requiring physical strength and agility are me idea of what an athelete is.

c'mon Will. I thought you were up to date on this stuff. The fact that he had the testes section surgery is proof in the pudding or whatever.

EPO's effect is to raise hematocrit levels allowing the blood to carry more oxygen. While EPO is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the body, the form used to dope is a variant of the naturally occurring EPO, made from recombinant DNA, and theoretically could be detected. However, there are currently no tests that are 100% reliable at detecting EPO abuse. The drug has become readily available in recent years as a treatment for anemia associated with cancer chemotherapy, HIV-infected, AZT-treated individuals, chronic renal failure predialysis, and as an alternative to blood transfusion in certain elective, non-cardiac, non-vascular surgical procedures.

So Borat are you saying if Lance Armstrong hadn't contracted cancer he would not be winning these races?

Wake up guys !
Why is it that someone accomplishes something great, He is Juiced ? Armstrong out trains and out works all the other pansies in the world so what is so surprising about his dominance ?

I'm not saying its surprising or he is juiced or drugged...I'm saying his accomplishment is mind boggling, and doesn't get enough recognition, is all....

I have always associated great athleticism with non olympic style sports, more of the team type sports, but what he's doing over this long a period is just unreal.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention the fact that Lance is tested almost every race and He has never failed a drug test ! Why is that ? Wake up and smell the roses guys... He is the freatest Cyclist of all time ! Babe Ruth was the greatest Baseball player and He excelled in 1927 era. Mark Spitz may have been the greatest swimmer ever and Michael Jordan may have been the greatest basketball player ever. Do We always try to find ways to discredit the great ones. You may but until I find out that Armstrong or Bonds or Ruth or Williams in fact cheated, I will simply sit back and admire their accomplishments. I am a Cub fan but I know that Sosa is a cheater ! The proof was scattered all over Wrigley field in the form of cork.

Whos is the better athelete Lance Armstrong with 6 straight Tour wins. Or The man who has caught a pass in 273 straight NFL games - Jerry Rice?

I'd have to go with Jerry Rice (who may be the greatest football player ever) but the question is, where does Lance fit in then?

Is he better then say the top 100 NFL players then?

Wil's take on this would be NO....I'm not sure if he can be fairly rated...
