as a red sox fan, I hate to see Nomar go, but the red sox HAD to trade him. He is going to be a free agent at the end of the season and he was going to leave Boston.

He's way too valuble in trade to let him get away for nothing as a free agent. Rumor is Matt Clement headed to Boston.

Losing Nomar will definately hurt, but they had to get something for him.

Clement is one of the better pitchers who has yet to fully blossom...Its a good trade all the way around, considering what will happen ...

Cubs have the pitching (if healthy) to part with a starter, and Nomar is not what he was in Boston....

interesting though, will Nomar stay in Chicago beyond this yr?

no Clement as part of this deal.

I take back what I said about having to deal Nomar. Red Sox got virtually nothing for him. At least Nomar could have helped them this year.

Nomar Garciaparra has played his final game in a Red Sox uniform. The Red Sox today dealt Garciaparra to the Cubs in a four-team deal that sent Expos shortstop Orlando Cabrera and Twins first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz to Boston. More details are upcoming. In a separate deal, the Red Sox acquired Dodgers outfielder Dave Roberts from the Dodgers. Derek Lowe was rumored to be a part of the deal originally, but it appears he'll stay with the Sox.

Boston is tumbling here, and this stems all the way back to the offseason...what a freaking joke!!!

First off they should have never fired Grady Little for 100 yrs of bad luck, then the A-Rod saga...

If I was a Boston fan I would be pissed....Dan Duquette couldn't have fvcked up this bad...WOW!

Red Sox lose a great player .... get nothing
Yankees lose a big liability...get an All Star pitcher

AL East race officially over. Yanks may have enough pitching for the playoffs now, if they stay healthy.

I need to go get some beer to cry in tonite.

Nomar gone for two guys htting .246

They really f___ed up by not getting the A Rod deal done now. I mean if Nomar has to go, they have to get something good for this guy. Big hitting shortstops are rare.

This was a money deal the Cubs only give up SS Alex Gonzalez but pick up free agent to be Nomar, he will be very expensive this off season. The Red Sox will actually be better defensively with Cabrera at SS and Pokey at 2nd (when healthy) and Mientk. at first. Their real problem has been defense, they still have a ton of offense. Bottom line Nomar was gone anyway, and only mediocre this year. Getting some kind of infield that could catch the ball was imperative for Boston.

Mientkiewicz is a gold glove weak hitting 1b, just got off il stay. Mired in horrible season slump. Had big leftie bat 1b ready to plug in. Team tried to dump him bad. Cabrera light hitter also. Backup infielder? They just dumped Nomar. Yanx got real arm for pretender Contrareas. White flag by Bosox this early? Now Lowe to start, no one would take him. Yanx even beat BoSox trading again...No No Nanette...Best Wishes...OF

I would love to hear the White Sox reasoning? Its gotta be HUGE CASH! White Sox are a horribly managed outfit!

They're right in the thick of it...what could they possibly be thinking?

If boston wanted to get rid of nomar they should have started much earlier than thi, come on??? They could have got something much better than this...What a joke!

Somewhere Fishhead is crying right now...

Cabrera has played in 263 consecutive games, a career high and the second-longest streak in Expos history. Very underated front line SS.

this just in- Red Sox also acquired a bucket of practice balls and a couple cases of pine tar in the Garciaparra trade. The bucket of balls is rumored to be in very good condition.

Cubs probably could have gotton Pedro Martinez from Boston had they offered a few minor leaguers, some cash and a couple of season tickets in a nice section.
