I don't know the rest of the details, but there goes Mr. Inconsistency. Still, Loaiza is definiitely a poor man's Randy Johnson.

A bum with a 7+ ERA with an HUGE contract for an under-rated allstar??

I was wondering why the Yanks were so quite about Benson.

the White Sox must be smoking crack. How could they possibly make this deal?

You're right, what the heck are they thinking? From what I'm seeing, they didn't get any prospects, just Contreras and cash.

ESPN is saying that it was Contreras and CA$H for Esteban ...

I thought selling out was just a Red Sox thing, but I guess it's just a Sox think

Loaiza is overrated and starting to fall back to his career numbers which are nothing good.He had an exceptional year in 03 because he was going to be looking for a job. That is why the White Sox dumped this guy wait and see.

And Jose is good, please guy can't handle pressure at all, better off in Bullpen , brutal as a starter, and without Yanks O, how is he going to win any games

Jose has really good stuff but is weak mentally. He looks lights out but once he gets one runner on base, he forgets what he has & pitches like a different man. The pressure of NY being gone from him might just turn him around.

Yanks sending a ton of money to White Sox also which in itself is meaningless on the playing field. Huge upside with Contreras only time will tell. Loaiza has just one win in his last five starts and has allowed four-plus runs in each of his last seven starts. No telling if he is the answer for Yanks, obviously Contreras was not.

Exactly what I think EGD playing in NYC is very tough on guys.Contreras imo has a very good chance of finishing the year decent.Loaiza is going to choke and choke big time there and you guys can hold me to it.

But on the other hand imo neither of these teams gained anything mabe the sox for picking up some cash but for the most part neither of these guys are going to help these teams. The White Sox will NOT make the playoffs not with that staff Garland,Shoenweiss etc are you kidding me?And the Yankees will do nothing in the playoffs with that staff and you better believe Joe Torre knows it.Yanks better stay healthy and hit a TON win it all the way I see it.

A # 3 starter at best for another #3 starter at best means nothing. This deal is insignificant as far as I'm concerned

great points nicky. but really, the huge upside with contreras is his youth. the guy has a lot of raw talent, theres no telling what could happen. like nicky said loaiza's numbers have come back down to earth, and who knows how much longer he'll be around. hawk harrelson sounded disgusted with him in some of his starts.

yankees get a player who possibly can help them, maybe not, but give up nothing in return as Contreras DEFINATELY can not help them. good value trade.

red sox pick-up two good defensive players for a hall of famer. terrible. brutal. dismal. what else can you say? the guys Boston got, they could have picked up for a song in the off-season. terrible value trade. this will haunt them as Nomar pounds pitching for the next 7 years or so and the guys they got for him are long, long gone.

Contreras is a media creation, who has yet to live up to expectations. He may, he may not. At this juncture, he is not. Loaiza might be dead arm. He just threw it out for big contract, and now he is paying price. Yanx still looking questionable in starting pitchers. Brown came back strong, will Moose? This trade was a surrender by Yanx, fearing Contreras would never make it. Both pitchers fade material. Best Wishes...OF

Loaiza has been getting hammered since May; his strikeout rate is down and homerun rate is up. His velocity is down 5 mph as well which hurts his splitter. He may have arm problems, or he may just have an arm that is feeling the effects of throwing 226 innings last year.

I don't think this helps the Yankees much.

Both are 32. Except for one year, Loaiza has been no better than a 4th starter. Loaiza has a history of arm problems.
Contreras has raw stuff and supposedly a weak mental makeup. Perhaps time away from the Big Apple will do him some good.
If you look at Contreras numbers last year, you will know the potential is there.
If you look at Loiaza's numbers without last year, he looks very average.
Look closer and the deal is not as lopsided as it looks.
