alot of question marks surround the Cubbies, the two Aces health issues......Nomar, will he be the Nomar of old? Sosa, can he turn it up two notches? they are loaded, but the have a lot of parts that are not running right at the moment.

NL is wide open...

go cubs...

Maddux had the butterflies in the first, gave up 2...

Garciaparra hits into double play in first at bat, crowd was going nuts, goes silent all of a sudden...but with wind blowing out, should be a long day...

I don't understand how they determine the winning pitcher.

It looks like it went to reliever Mercker who pitched for one out!

Maddux came out after six innings with Chicago trailing by a run, so he wasn't around for a rally in the bottom of the 7th that won it for the Cubs. Kent Mercker became the pitcher of record when he got the last out in the top of the 7th for the Cubs. Latroy Hawkins got the save (16th).

here is an excerpt from rule 10.19 which details the grading of winning and losing pitchers, from mlb.com

".....the provisions of 10.19 (a) or (b) and more than one relief pitcher is used, the victory shall be awarded on the following basis: (1) When, during the tenure of the starting pitcher, the winning team assumes the lead and maintains it to the finish of the game, credit the victory to the relief pitcher judged by the scorer to have been the most effective; (2) Whenever the score is tied the game becomes a new contest insofar as the winning and losing pitcher is concerned; (3) Once the opposing team assumes the lead all pitchers who have pitched up to that point are excluded from being credited with the victory except that if the pitcher against whose pitching the opposing team gained the lead continues to pitch until his team regains the lead, which it holds to the finish of the game, that pitcher shall be the winning pitcher;(4) The winning relief pitcher shall be the one who is the pitcher of record when his team assumes the lead and maintains it to the finish of the game......."

Even though Mercker only pitched to and got out one batter (last out in top of 7th.) he became the pitcher of record when the Cubs scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th.

Thanks wil and Rob.

So Mercker got lucky since the Cubs rallied botton of the 7th. I'll never again put the same faith in pitcher W/L records!
