Athens - Athens Olympics chief Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki declared on Monday that preparations for the delay-ridden Games were now complete, eleven days before the August 13 opening ceremony.

"Nobody could imagine that so many venues would be ready," she said.

"Nobody could imagine seeing a whole army of volunteers ready ... for us it is not a surprise but we like to surprise the world."

Comparing her state to that of a marathon runner reaching the finish line, she said: "I'm running smoothly, I still have strength, I'm smiling, I can see the end of the marathon right after the next corner. I'm looking forward to the end of it. I'm in good shape."

"Victory will be declared on August 29 (closing ceremony), but I'm confident," she said. "I cannot just claim victory, the Games have to start and to finish."

Angelopoulos-Daskalaki also confirmed a last-minute surge in ticket sales.

"We started at 3 000 (tickets sold) per day ... before midday today (monday) we reached over 20 000," she said.

According to the latest official figures from the end of June, a total 1.95m tickets had been sold of the 5.3m available. Some 80 000 tickets were sold in the last week alone, organisers, Athoc, said on Sunday.

"People feel it (the Games) is very close and buy some tickets... we have only cheap tickets now," Angelopoulos-Daskalaki said.

Another one million tickets could be sold during the Games, she added.

"In Sydney, they sold something like one million tickets during the Games".
