Just curious as to how many have had a close family member who was a bookie?

My father did it years ago, and therefore all the terms, and concepts of wagering just come natural to me....

I bet i could find 20 people at work, if i said the term "parlay" wouldnt have a clue....

I was just raised around the horsetrack, ball games, and betting, so its second nature to me.....

I run a small football pool at work, and i know many times when someone will ask how it works, i will say we pick the games straight up, no pointspreads, and they will say "what's a pointspread?"....

i think i knew what one was when i was five...

Funny how things change though, when i was real little, and my dad would take me to the track, i mean little 6-7 years old, he would give me 20.00, and tell me it was mine to bet how i wanted....Back then i would pocket the 20.00, be happy, and be the winner in the group...

How things change.....lmfao

But i think to those of us that knew someone who booked, especially a father or grandfather, most of this is just second nature.....

Your track story reminds me of taking my younger son when he was 7 or 8. I staked him (meaning I took from my pocket but did not give him the money) for the $2 selections he made in several races. He also had some fries and likely ice-cream. He did well and made money. However I deducted all the stakes and food costs from his winnings. He still came away with a nice chunk of change but not as much as he thought he would have. Years later he said that taught him the value of money.

Bucs,
If you really want to lose them start talking about why the European decimal system is a purer system.

Speaking of which, does anyone else get the idea that the American odds system was designed just for us for the sole reason that the southerners wouldn't have understood at that tricky algebra stuff that comes with the great European odds system?

Quite true but I think the US system must have been designed to help scalpers.

Coming from the land of 15/8, 9/5, 3/2, 6/5 on (placed in order of increasing juice) either of these systems is much easier to work with. Have fun every time I play at Ladbrokes.
