Will the oddsmaker adjust accordingly and can we expect to see higher scores early in the season?

Does anyone have the avg point totals for the entire NFL over the last few years?

Good post max...I am wondering just how many extra points the new rules will calculate into?

JMan:

This past weekend I watched the Oakland/SF game wherein, the referees called 21 penalties for 215 yards on the Raiders, many of which, at least a half dozen, were pass interference penalties that there was minimal contact downfield. These penalties completely affected the total in the game as the Niners were unable to move the ball traditionally and were bailed out time and time again by these calls. It allowed them to move the ball downfield into scoring position through penalty after penalty and thus set up scores. Final Score: 33-30. Time of the game: 3.5+ hours.

If the referees strictly enforce this rule during the regular season, expect teams to adjust their game plans and start throwing more thus lengthening the game and increasing the score. Imagine, no contact whatsoever downfield. This will make the teams that have shutdown corners that can cover without contact very significant. These players are rare. Perhaps the reason Denver willing traded Clinton Portis to Washington for Champ Bailey. Maybe the reason Deion Sanders is considering a comeback.

Bottom line, as players, we need to be prepared for viewing some very frustrating calls as currently we are visually use to the old rule and the new rule is significantly different and game changing. We must be prepared to adjust depending on the severity and consistency of the interpretation of this rule from game to game. Definitely a factor to be included when evaluating any particular game match-up. Best of luck this football season.

more points, more BS, and what they really want: no pats championship

the NFL will be more aggravating than ever. the new challenege rule isnt exactly offseting the bedlam in whistle blowing that will surely occur. besides, you cant challenge PI.

all the more reason to focus on NCAA, JMHO

Also, in that Raider game, like you said, there was minimal contact but they called a lot of penalties on the Raiders. Then, when in came time for the Niners to get called on interfence upon almost mugging one of out receivers, no flag was thrown. My thoughts on this situation was it was going to make it easier for the league to rig games, i.e. make the Raiders and Al Davis lose.

Now you see why books offer the famous "10 Point and 13 point Teaser Plays"

Watch for the latest Super-Duper--Teaser Play- Called---the 25 point teaser. You will have to use it in the same game and make 4 plays. Totals Sides--Penalty Yds --and # called on each side!!
