Makes for a tough seeding for US if they continue. They will have to start with top team of other bracket. I would prefer them to exit quickly as I have 9-1 on Lithuania and Argentina. Made plenty betting against them but number will be adjusted after 4 straight ATS losers. Just fun watching US getting cut to shreds by good ball movement. Best Wishes...OF

No they will have to lose to Angola on Monday to miss the quarterfinals. What Angola is even doing with an Olympic hoops team is beyond me.

Even if they lose to Angola( and Angola played Lithuania and Puerto Rico down to the wire) they will probably, almost certainly still get in with this points system the olympic basketball tournament goes by. A lot of bizarre things would have to happen and believe me those things wont happen, so look forward to a U.S. Puerto Rico rematch in the first game of the Semi-finals.

Hey Fish...that thread was comparing them as rookies and impact on their teams...Bird and Johnson went to the Olympics after they were 10 yr vets....I agree to an extent but you're taking that old thread out of context...

BTW I did call Lithania by 3 and incuded who would be the games star player.

Fish,
The world competition is also MUCH better now than it was during the Magic/Bird era, but, regardless, I do agree with your assessment.

It works like this fellas:
12 teams are placed in 2 six team groups. They play each team in their group once (round robin). After that, the top four in each group move on to the medal round which consists of an 8-team knockout tournament (quarters, semis, finals). The top seed in each group plays the four seed in the other group. The two's play the threes, etc.

There is a point system for qualifying, basically it is based on wins and losses, what the tiebreaker is after that, I don't know.

Angola qualified by virtue of winning the African Olympic Qualifying tournament. Every habitated continent was guaranteed at least one team.

I looked up on the Olympic website, but couldn't find anything about the tiebreakers for qualifying for the medal round.

relax!!!!! the usa is in the elite 8!!! single elimination from there.......and am i the only one left who thinks they will win the gold!!?......and another think give these guys credit for showing up, many players said no to playing the olympics so i support the guys that did take time out of there lives to play for our country. yet it does seem to be a nothing to gain and everything to lose situation for them.

While Angola had a bit of trouble with Australia, you make a good point by mentioning how well they did against 2 tough teams-PUR and LTU. Look for the line to be big against this unknown team from Africa when they play USA. The Yanks will always bet on this team regardless of a big line and it will cause the line to be off. ANG will make it closer than the line though and you can make some good money here betting on the Angolans. They will want to put in a good effort against the millionaires.

Let's not forget that this IS the US's "C" team at the Olympics. If they had their "A" team out there no one would be within double figures of them.

USA still the favorite for the gold, probably about a 40-45% chance of winning it. Lithuania and then Spain have the next best shots.

USA covered the spread, for the first time, with a 89-53 win against Angola. I guess the books didn't need to go to -37 to get action.

Lithuania should cruise to gold the way they've been playing.
