Wine is big business in New York state, which is second in production only to California, and Gov. George Pataki is looking to take advantage of its 31,400 acres of vineyards. Pataki recently approved legislation designating portions of the state highway system as official Winery Trails. The Chautauqua, Canandaigua, Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka, Hudson River and the Long Island trails are scattered throughout the state's four wine regions. While many of the wineries in each of these areas have already come together to host tastings and seasonal festivals, the state designation means each stretch of roadway will receive improved signage. The names of the highways, however, will not change.
