Anyone know who to contact about incorrect credit information on one's credit report?

A friend of mine has a few things in his file that don't belong, and has had no succes contacting the correct person's on how to or what to do about this?

I figure someone would have an answer around here on what and or who to contact about this...

Here is the easiest way to do this. You call each three (I'll provide the numbers) and order your report from each one at a cost of $8 each. It will take 7-10 days to receive them. Once you receive them, each one will have it's own tracking number/code that will be listed with a new toll-free number. Call each number and give the operator your code so you can beging the dipute process. Just go through and dispute everything that is negative or derogatory. They are not supposed to ask for reasoning, but be prepared just in case. They will each do their own research and the creditors have 14 business days to respond or the bureaus automatically delete the negatives. On top of all this, the bureaus will bump your scores even if nothing is removed because they reward people who are proactive in fixing their credit.

Equifax: 800-685-111

Experian: 888-397-3742

TransUnion: 800-916-8800.

Best of luck.

The only catch here is that each time your credit history is requseted it can have an adverse effect, especially if it is sketchy to begin with.

So if he has had multiple inquiries recently, that can come into play. SO he should probably stick to the one that is reporting the problems, once he fixes it with them, and it goes into the system, the others will rectify it on their own.

Journey,
Since you are in Maryland, you are entitled to a free report once per year from each bureau. MD is one of a few states that you get one free even if you haven't been denied credit.

Also, requesting your credit report DOES NOT affect your credit score. Only having creditors pull your credit affects your score as it looks like you are trying to buy things. You could get a credit report from the 3 bureaus every day and it would never affect your score.

The key to remember is to pay ALL bills on time.
If in a pinch call them explain that it'll be a few day late.
You can analyze the reports till the cows come home but if your not paying on time, its a waste of time.

my credit score used to be around 810. Then the IRS showed up with a 1.8 million dollar tax lien. My score went to 550 overnight. That lien is now shown as 100% satisfied and my score is 630-go figure.

Jacks, you are correct there. I see where my statement could be taken the wrong way. I would still keep it as simple as possible.
