Dicky,

I haven't read this paperwork yet, but my understanding is that I walk into the post office with $85, they take 2 photos, I have a certified birth cert, a photo ID, they call for a background check, I fill out a form, and then I walk out with a passport. I didn't hear of a wait. Is that something I missed?

Got mine 5 years ago things may have changed. After I took care of things at the post office they sent my stuff to Chicago, got my Passport one week later. I paid around $85 but I paid extra for them to put a rush on it. I think they said it would be 2-4 weeks. I believe the price was $65

On the back of the application it does mention a $60 fee to expedite, so i assume you are correct.

I'm planning on going overseasnext year. How long do I need to get my passport before I go? I just show up at the post office with a birth certificate, some money, and fill out some paperwork and they send it to me?

A photo ID also GD, then I guess there is a couple week wait. I'd do down to post office and get specifics.

General,

When I got mine, I had to first go to kinko's or a similar place to get my passport photo taken. I don't think they're going to take your picture at the the post office. The regular mail takes about a month to get it back, the expedite is less than a week.

GENERAL, EXPIDITE IS 2 WEEKS OR LESS...REGULAR WAIT IS ABOUT 4 TO 6 WEEKS...THERE IS NO WAY THEY WILL GIVE IT TO YOU RIGHT AWAY..ESPECIALLY AFTER 9/11.....I HAD MINE EXPIRE AND DID NOT REALIZE IT, HAVE A FRIEND WHO IS VERY WELL CONNECTED IN WASH D.C...I HAD TO CHANGE MY PLANS AND FLY TO D.C FIRST AND GO TO THE PASSPORT OFFICE THERE AND GET IT DONE IN 12 HOURS...SO NO WAY YOU WILL GET IT RIGHT AWAY.....

Gen, if you think that is bad....someone that applies for a visa for the US has to pay a $100 fee........

and of course that doesnt guarantee you're getting one by any stretch of the imagination..
