In a recent conversation with a sizeable investor for a well-known offshore sports book, the backer admitted he actively donates his time and money to lobby on behalf of efforts to block internet betting.

Wild Bill know this guy but doesn't care to divulge his name. Hey I can understand that.

We talk alot about what most American would approve if voted on etc etc. And Wild Bill thinks if it came to a simple vote it would not be banned. Ok. I think about the Americans that shop at Walmart etc. or more importantly do not mind buying foreign made products simply because they are cheaper. Never mind that some American lost their job to somebody in Brazil China or India--hey it's cheaper for the buying American public! So they are delighted to buy the same product at a cheaper price. Now how would most American vote if they had to vote on Lets keep Walmart (or any store for that matter) and buy less expensive foreign made products. OR Lets close Walmart (or equivelant store ) and buy only American made products, saving a US job.
I think we both know the answer to that. Bottom line in my opinion is that it's the religious right that keeps it from being legal here (gambling) oh yeah and a few nameless friends of Wild Bill.

OMT,

Surveys show a little under 20% of the population think gambling is never right. About 20% say it is ok for others, just not themselves. The rest say it is fine to have it within limits.

Look beyond just the religious right sir to find the true opponents. Not just the gambling operators, but people like store and restaurant owners or purveyors of other forms of entertainment. They fear losing their share to a casino and are really the most effective and vocal opponents. The press gives time to the religiously based opposition, but I think it is the competing interests that do the best in organizing against it...including hypocritical gaming operators.
