Fish: Do you ever go to the games ? I know it's not a good betting opportunity ! It's an action sport. Florida used to have at least 6 frontons. I'm sure Miami still exists, what about the others ? I recall Dania, Fort pierce,Daytona, Tampa, and some others.

Casinos killed it, much like dog-racing.

Used to play at the MGM Vegas. They have one here in Orlando with the race book. Think its mainly a Southern FL thing.

Kyhawk; It's not really just a S. Florida thing. It used to be big in CT ( 3 frontons ), one in R.I., one at old MGM in Vegas. It died in CT, I think RI still operative.

It's a good sport, I used to play , when younger, never made pro, came close. Players don't make big $$$.

Kyhawk: When you say you used to play... Do you mean as a gambler, or a player, in a practice session ?

I've played there in the early 80's to mid 80's ( not pro), and in Tijuanna. If you were an ameateur player, I played against many other ameateur players that made the pro ranks, for a time, none became stars, that's reserved for the Basques.

I'd say the best American ever was " Joey".

Have only been one time.

I have a friend who is well known in the wiseguy Vegas world who found a way to manipulate the pools here in Florida in such a way that he made mega-thousands.

Here's a system that has worked for me well when betting Jai-alai.

It's a computer generated forumula for wagering on Perfectas that has the mosty likely combinations to fall based on their positions when they play...

I want to emphasize that this is NOT based at all on any player performance, it is just a numbers program...

The cost is 3 dollars a ticket and one would need to wager 27 dollars per game...

These are the following Perfectas to bet each game...

3-1, 4-1, 5-1
4-2, 5-2, 6-2
5-3, 6-3, 7-3

Best of Luck,

THE SHRINK

Yes, the ones in CT have been closed for years now. RI is still open in Newport. I miss it.

Newport does not have jai-alai anymore. It is only open for simulcasting of jai-alai from other places like Dania and Miami. From what I hear, they mainly just have video slots now.

I used to go to Dania Jai Alai a lot. My dad told me the system he used in the 70's made money slowly grinding out profits, 1-2-3-4 quinnela box every game.

It did not work for me, maybe too many people caught on to the low numbers by the 90's.

I have seen Joey play many times. He was outstanding. The odds in his singles games would be ridiculous, but it was suicide to bet against him cause he won so much.

it's a great thing to gamble on, my heart would be beating out the chest over a $12 quinella box ticket, its too bad its almost completely dead.

Use to go to the Tampa Fronton on Dale Mabry weekly, loved it...

I enjoyed it more than Tampa Bay Downs, Derby Lane, or Tampa Greyhound track, and i made money at it...

Shrink is right about number combinations, they are much different with jai alai....you could have the best 3 players in the game as 3,4,5 and if somehow with a long game, or a playoff, they all get in the money, you will get a good payoff....In a horse race if 3,4,5 are the best, the payoff is small...

I hit a trifecta one night 4-5-8......a very hard combo to hit with the numbers, and it paid 1991.00....and the #4 player was 4-5 odds....

lol, wow i miss jai-alai, i loved it...

A few observations on jai-alai

Fish: I'm familiar with the story about pool manipulation. It's very long and detailed. The key element was making $1 bets off-track, that could only be made for $2 or $3 at the fronton. I believe it was on pick6 carry-over pools. Only room for one person to do it. I think it was corrected long ago.

The problem with jai-alai is the house must hold about 18% to operate.Very difficult to overcome. Pools are small, trifectas probably account for over 60% of betting.

The scoring favors low numbers. Usually 8 teams ( or players). Post 1 serves to post 2, winner plays post 3, and so on. Points in first round count as 1 point, after post 8 has played one point, points score 2 points for the rest of the game. 7 points usually wins.

Posts 5-7 are the most difficult to win from. Usually the best players are assigned those positions. I think Miami does it randomly.

oddly having the serve in a doubles game is somewhat of a disadvantage, but it's a big advantage in singles.

Certain number combinations occur so infrequently, they should never be bet ( for trifecta). For example 7-8-6, or 5-7-6, etc.The pay-out won't justify the bet. A year could pass before 7-8-6 hits.

Most people just play the same number combinations every game ( about 12-15 games equals a performance).

No team should ever be even money or better, or longer than about 12:1. The trifecta money is reasonably split amoung the teams. Win odds mean little. A $20 bet at post time can change 10:1 into 2:1

I used to have success betting perfectas ( Exactas) at post time, and taking all the long odds. They had monitors set up displaying the odds. After a time everyone knew this trick, and it no longer worked. Even now a quinella sometimes pays more than a perfecta.

It's great entertainment, but not profitable. Very tough game to cap. You can get an excellent seat for a few dollars.

I'd reccomend anyone visiting Florida take in a performance, but bet small. It's much more exciting than horse/dog racing.

The game is played very differently in Europe. They have long matches ( partidos) with 2 teams, and you can bet after every point. The American version penalizes the best players with it's format. They also get 2 attempts at serving in Europe.
( like tennis). Think how tennis would be different with one serve, that's why serving is a disadvantage ( in doubles).

I miss the game, I wasn't aware Newport also folded. Miami is suppossed to have the best players. The best games are the last 5-6 games on the card, best players.

I could swear there is one in West Palm Beach, FL right near the airport. I've also been to the one in Daytona but it's been awhile. They were fun to go to but like you said Doug TOUGH to cap.
