Does anyone remember when A LICENSED VET @ Belmont Actually switched a Stakes caliber horse for a $5000 Claimer??? The horses names were Lebon and Cinzano...Made the NY Times and most sports papers across the USA...Vet scored for over 196k in tri and exacta and win pools...He virtually Won the Pools....Wound up getting caught when a groom noticed the "$5000 claimer" in the winners circle was the horse he rubbed in Venezuela the year before that was a stakes calibre horse ....Vet pleaded NO contest after FBI came in...Returned the $$$$ and lost his license to practice veterinary medicine in the US.....I used to work at the track and I have stories (all true) that would make your hair fall out...I will tell a few more next month..AS far as the non believers...what can I say...Look this article up in the NY TImes archives the year ??? Maybe mid sixties late sixties..

I was there that day, 9th race, your way off with the year however, 1977, I believe.

Dr.Gerard, I remember it well. It was a trifecta race, Pincay and Velasquez were on the 2nd and 3rd horses, they were the shit back then, so you always threw them in anyway, so it was a hitable tri if you knew about the winner. He took the money out in a brown paper bag, no check, that opened a few eyes.

this was back in the 70's.the scam worked
because South American horses didn't have
identifying Tatoos back then.it also had
the added appeal of being an insurance scam.
The stakes winner that supposedly died(but the
other horse died in "his place") was
insured for like 100k or something.

googled it. the veterinarian who worked the scam
was Mark Gerard. He was Secretariat's vet back in
the day.Worked the insurance angle with the owner.
Apparently cashed the tickets himself. you wouldThink he
would have someone else do it.

Risked a 6 figure job,to work an angle.That's
a real racetrack kind of guy.

Ragozin's crew made a score on that race too. Hit the triple 2x IIRC. Which earned them a visit from FBI investigators who thought they were in on the fix.

Comparing thoroughbred racing to harness racing is like comparing the US Presidential election to high school student council president.

Penn National(Tbreds also had fixes just a couple of years ago ).
