Ouch: Winslow, Brown hurt in loss
By Pat McManamon, Editor
September 19, 2004

IRVING, TX.-The Browns got beat up in a big way in Sunday's 19-12 loss to Dallas.

Three first-round draft picks left the field with injuries. Most alarming was rookie tight end Kellen Winslow, who might have broken his fibula.

Defensive end Courtney Brown (foot) and defensive tackle Gerard Warren (pectoral muscle) also were sidelined. Finally, Ryan Tucker, the cornerstone of the offensive line, missed the last couple series with a quadriceps injury.

The team was vague in describing the injuries, but Winslow and Brown could miss a lot of time.

Winslow hurt his right leg as the Browns tried a free kick following a safety with eight seconds left in the game.

As Winslow tried to recover Phil Dawson's drop-kick, he was sandwiched by two other Browns. He was helped off the field, driven to the locker room in a cart and sent in for X-rays.

Coach Butch Davis would not speculate on the injury, except to say it would be evaluated today. But several team sources said Winslow had broken his fibula.

If true it would mean Winslow could miss up to several weeks.

Brown left the game in the first period with what was called a mid-foot sprain. Team doctors told Davis at halftime that Brown would not return.

Brown will have an MRI exam Monday to determine the severity of the injury, but it is believed to be serious - and potentially season-ending.

Nobody on the team would comment, but mid-foot sprains sometimes turn into the "Liz Franc" injury, named after the French doctor who discovered the problem in Napoleonic times.

That injury ended the season of Errict Rhett of the Browns in 2000, and ended the season of Duce Staley the same year when he was with Philadelphia.

Tucker sat on the bench during the Browns' last couple possessions, which indicates he has a problem. Tucker, one of the team's toughest players, rarely takes himself out of a game.

Tucker walked to the bus after the game. He said he would have an MRI Monday but would not comment on the injury.

It is believed the concern is with his quadriceps tendon, which does not sound good.

Warren left the game in the first half after aggravating a pulled pectoral muscle.

It's likely that aggravating the injury will cause Warren to miss time.

All the injuries have to bring back bad memories for the Browns, who were decimated by injuries the last two seasons.

But they never had a day when three first-round picks went to the sidelines

It is not suprising that there seems to be more injuries than in the past. Players are bigger, faster, and stronger than in the past.
