THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF WINNING VIDEO POKER PLAY
By Guest Columnist Rob Singer

(Editors Note: While the following excellent article by Rob Singer is about Video Poker, most of the advice is applicable to any form of gambling and should be studied seriously and in detail.)

Everyone wants to know how to win and how to win often enough for it to make any difference. So today, I'm going to give you my version of what it takes to do just that.

1) Never, ever play without a pre-set plan. Winning players set win/loss goals BEFORE going inside a casino. Only a fool would sit down and pound away at the buttons without direction. Goals are the catalyst to all successes in life. It is up to you - and no one else selling you books, programs, videos, or strategy cards - if you want gambling to become one of them.

2) Do not let casino excitement detract from the plan you went in with. The booze, the women, the music, and the sports are there for a single reason - to assist you in making larger deposits into the casino banks. What's your only defense? ALWAYS, always do only what you said you were going to do. Let the other guys finance all that entertainment. You're there to win.

3) Make sure you have the proper bankroll for the strategy and denomination(s) that you intend to play. Whenever I make a trip, do I first need to go to some guru or math-geek web site and attempt to decipher confusing bankroll calculations formulated somewhere in the clouds? Of course not! The formula is simple: Take at least 3 times 400 credits of the highest denomination you are going to play. There are variations to this rule depending on what strategy is to be played, but by and large this is the general rule.

4) Only stay at the same machine for a comfortable amount of time. If you become uneasy or fussy at any point, move. Change casinos as often as you'd like. Spread your entertainment-seeking around. There's a lot to see in most gaming communities or towns. People who sit at the same machines for hours upon hours are some of the most unhappy and unsatisfied players I've ever talked to. Winners remain at peace with themselves no matter where they play, and they know that variety is almost always a dynamo for enjoyment.

5) Stay away from casino ATM's. They are only on the floor for one purpose: To entice those addicted to gaming not to stop or go home when they should. I've said this many, many times, and people are beginning to write me acknowledging this fact: If you plant yourself close by any casino ATM, you will generally see the most pathetic looking bunch of losers trying colorful card after colorful card - and with the most amusing set of facial contortions you'll ever see as they are denied cash time after time. And wait until you see them FINALLY get cash from one of their last cards! It IS precious. Besides folks, casino cash machines tend to have the highest fees on the planet.

6) Always play the machines with the best pay tables in the casino you choose to play at. So often I see more patrons at the lower paying machines just because they are nearer the entrance to the buffet, the music can be heard better, or they can see the TV's better from there. I always say video poker is a game of common sense. Does that make sense?

7) Never, ever play for the points instead of for the money. I know upon reading this that most of you are saying "I don't play for points!" But then reality sets in. You begin to get excited about the upcoming triple points day at one of your hangouts, or the fact that the slot club is 'giving away' logo windbreakers to anyone who earns 5000 points this Tuesday. Then you start to review how and why you played last week. It's all there in black and white, isn't it. Forget about the blabbing you hear on the tube. Never mind all the sweet talk that comes with those who are bamboozled into thinking points and club card status are the end all. Make the smart choice and simply play for the money. After all, isn't that what it's all about?

8) Ignore promotions. They are THE highest money-maker for any casino marketing department. Sure, you'll hear and see the video poker gurus say how promos add a fraction of a percent to the theoretical pay out of this or that machine, but in reality, it only counts if you win the promotion. The rest go home big losers. And besides, who cares about a tiny percentage anyway?

9) Play where YOU want to play, and not where some misled well-wisher tells you to play. We all know - and hear all too often - how most Strip casinos have poor pay tables. The optimal-play crowd tells you to stay away from them at all costs. I say they're full of beans. Who's to say you won't hit a big winner TODAY on any machine anywhere? As long as you have a plan associated with that hit, you will leave a winner. One more point: Do you enjoy winning at the luxurious properties on the Strip where you'll feel comfortable anywhere, or would you prefer an armed guard be required to walk you out to your car at one of the other locations?

10) Lastly, learn to think for yourself. Advice is one thing, but when you are tied to a strategy that requires you go through the roof every time you notice you've not made the perfect play - or if you are addicted to that laminated strategy card in your pocket that's better suited as a drink coaster - you've got a serious problem. Winners learn to sort things out for themselves. They are comfortable with how they approach the game, and rely on no one for their choices in playing hands. Is that you?

I take some offense to this:

And besides, who cares about a tiny percentage anyway?
Video poker is a game of small percentages and if you can add a small % to your payback, it will manifest itself nicely in the long term.

.

Rob Singer is a frigging moron.

Fishead could post anything, anything about video poker and it would be 18,000 times more helpfull to anyone than the drivel Rob Singer writes.

I'm sorry, Fishead, I'll change it to 18 million times better, thats more accurate

Thanks Mr. Smith

There are times when Mr. Singer makes some good points, but overall I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend to all the RX readers to save their time and completely distain from reading ANY Singer articles.

Quote by Singer in above article...............

Ignore promotions. They are THE highest money-maker for any casino marketing department. Sure, you'll hear and see the video poker gurus say how promos add a fraction of a percent to the theoretical pay out of this or that machine, but in reality, it only counts if you win the promotion. LOL!

Ignore promotions?
Who cares about a tiny percentage anyway?

OMG!

In all seriousness, this guy has no business writing for Gaming Today.........whatsoever!

Your ABSOLUTE best way to learn about VP is reading anything and everything from Bob Dancer, Dan Paymar, Anthony Curtis, and of course.............myself. :)

Again, my advice is to COMPLETELY abstain from anything written by Singer.

Save your time for more meaningful things.
