Yup

I am a little suprised as well. I did't think they would have enough sticks to get them through the year. I placed a wager on under 89 wins for the year. It's not looking good for me at this point.

simple

when you have hudson, mulder, zito and harden you rarely have long losing streaks and thus win a lot of games. the park they play in is a graveyard which fits the pitchers just fine and as a result - the a's win a lot of games they have no business winning. that is until the post-season when they choke worse than Greg Norman.

Anusheim has had plenty of opportunities to catch the Asses, but their impatience at the plate (Vlad's freeswinging has triggered the rest of the cast to being whiff prone) has led to very few bases on balls, big strikeout totals (witness the game in June where MIlwaukee struck em out 26 times for a ML record; McPherson gets the golden sombrero last nite in a 6-3 loss) and thus, prolonged periods of not scoring many runs- which is unacceptable for a lineup with this firepower.

Why are the A's so good? I thought it was common knowledge by this point. It hasnt exactly been a secret. The A's have one of the lowest payrolls in MLB. However they have re-invented the way a player is scouted. On base-percentage(walks!) and slugging percentage are stats much more applicable towards scoring runs than batting average and RBIs will ever be. Bily Beane and the A's will continue to bring up Baseball players....not the biggest and strongest....but ballplayers. Sure they will lose zito and mulder and hudson to high paying teams....but since the mid 90's they continue to bring up remarkable talent at a hugely discounted rate. blah blah Read MONEYBALL. then ask wh ythe A's are so good.
