I have been accused of being a "steam player". I don't even know what that means!!!

Can someone explain what "steam" and "steam plays" are? And also why this is considered such a terrible thing?

Steam:

1 : a vapor arising from a heated substance
2 a : the invisible vapor into which water is converted when heated to the boiling point b : the mist formed by the condensation on cooling of water vapor
3 a : water vapor kept under pressure so as to supply energy for heating, cooking, or mechanical work. :) :)

Just kidding, I am sure some of the "experts" will help you out with a real gambling definition. The usual suspects should respond.

Steam - when a betting line starts to move quite rapidly. Most steam games do not necessarily reflect the right side, but are games where the majority of players decide to focus their attention and action.

Baus,

A ‘Steam Play” is when a professional betting group make a play on a particular team, causing the line to move, almost simultaneous, at multiple sportsbooks.

A “Steam Player” is a sports bettor whose wagers usually fall on those games.

On our system we track steam plays for our Express and Premium Odds customers. So far this week they are 25-17-2, so I guess you can see why some people would think they are a bad thing.

If you are not already a Don Best customer and would like to have access to this type of information for yourself, send me an email to ricka@donbest.com and I will set you up with a free 30-day trial of our Express Odds service.

Thanks,
Rick

Wil: You are most amusing.

General: Good definition. That's sort of what I figured it was...but your clear definition makes perfect sense.

Rick: Thank you for the offer. I will email you shortly.

DPO: I am not a terrible person. I am not an outcast at work...in fact, I don't even work at all. Women love me. Small children are indifferent to me. Dogs usually approach me, smell my crotch, then leave. I don't consider myself evil. I am always generous to my fellow man and/or lemurian.

In all seriousness, WTF is the big deal with steam plays then???

If I am to understand all of this correctly, this is an example of a "steam play":

6:00 pm: NYY -150
6:30 pm: NYY -149
6:45 pm: NYY -145
6:50 pm: NYY -135
6:55 pm: NYY -130
7:04 pm: NYY -130

So, according to my example, if I bet the NYY at -130, at 7:04 pm, and I WIN, I am a "steam player"???

Baus,

No, that is not a steam play. A steam play is as follows:

Pinnacle Some shlt book

BOS +140 BOS +140
BOS +135 BOS +140
BOS +130 BOS +140

Now that it's moved to +130 at Pinnacle, you hit Boston at the shlt book for +140. The shlt book will blame you for cheating (ie. being a steam player) rather than themselves for being such a shlt book that they can't even follow line changes.

no. if you follow the steam and you are a steam player youd be playing the side that caused the move and getting the bad price on it looks like boston +120 or so according to your example. but before the steam looks like they get it at +140.

the thinking behind being a steam player is yes you are getting worse prices than the groups that originally caused the steam but you dont mind so much becuase you believe you will end up hitting a higher percentage of winners.

someone correct me if im wrong, but i think i got it

Keep in mind there are the 'originators' and the 'followers' on "steam" plays. Although sportsbooks will usually throw out both, the originators are really the only ones they should fear in the long run.

Good example would be yesterdays Fightin Irish Game. The "originator steam" was all over ND -11 and -11.5. The "followers steam" was laying ND at -12, 12.5 and 13. Game ended up closing 13.5 and ND wins 38-3. Big win for both the 'originators' and the 'followers'.

Don Best is a good tool to track the moves but dont think that by purchasing it you will be able to take advantage of the "steam plays".

At best you will be able to go back the next day and see what they are.

Perhaps by accident your just very sharp. You might just be matching up with the pros and your good winning streak is scaring the book. If thats the case it not a bad thing. In fact I hope you win alot of money.

Good Luck

That's probably what it is.

All of this brings to mind another question:

It seems as though Pinnacle moves their lines based on the action they receive. Why does it seems that all other books move their lines in order to stay similar to Pinnacle?

What I mean is, if Pin has a game that is +131 & -139, Greek will be +130 & -140. And if Pin moves to +125 & -133, Greek will move 30 seconds later to +124 & -134.

Shouldn't Greek simply be moving their lines on the action that THEY receive and not on the action that Pinnacle receives?

Note: I just used Greek as an example. It seems to me that amost every book follows Pinnacle this way.
