Cardinals are now at 103 wins with 7 games to play. The National League Record for wins is 108 by a couple of teams. I am pretty confident that Cardinals will reach all time franchise at 106. Does anyone think they have a chance to tie/break this record? I figure after series in Houston that they will rest several of the starters at least 1 maybe 2 games vs Milwaukee. Any thoughts?

It's not going to happen. 6 games left, but worse... 3 against LAD, and 3 against SD. Both of these teams are scrapping for every game they can get. What does St. Louis have to play for? 1 thing - avoid injuries. Starters will be pulled early or rested. The game result is meaningless.

Take tomorrow's game. St. Louis is a +127 dog to Houston?!? If St. Louis played its "balls-out" batting lineup, and commited the bullpen like the game mattered, the no-vig line should be about St. Louis -120. But mark my words: 1-2 batters in the starting lineup will not play the 9th inning, and the better relievers won't be commited. What could possibly be gained from it?

daringly,

FYI, Cards play at Houston for 3 and at home vs Milwaukee for 4. Record in Houston this year is 5-1 while Cards have beaten Milwaukee 5 of last 6 games after playing poorly against them in April. Larussa will rest starters but I don't think he will as much in Houston as we wants to regain some continuity with the starting team and also try to keep Houston out of it. IMO Cards will at least win 106 games assuming winning 1 of 3 in Houston and even splitting 4 at home vs Milwaukee. I feel they have a 50/50 chance of tying the record but don't think they will win 6 of 7.

I think the Cards will not try to beat Houston. They don't want to do anything that could help the Cubs. IMO

d2,

I don't think the Cards are as worried about the Cubs as the Cubs are about the Cards. I actually think they welcome the Cubs to be there and especially after Prior's comments a month a go. If these two teams meet in the playoffs, public will bet the Cubs for the series but imo Cards win in 5. Cards and Larussa still haven't forgotten Zambrano throwing at Edmonds and the fact that they won't get their proper due for this season unless they validate it against Cubs in the playoffs. Cards are only worried about themselves!

The National (and Major) League record for wins is 116 by the 1906 Chicago Cubs.

Picasso,

Major league record for wins was tied by Seattle 3 years ago at 118 with the Cleveland Indians. The modern day record for National League wins in a season is 108 shared by I believe 3 teams.

I am sorry for using the "R" word - and NOTHING EL

Seattle won 116, not 118. Cleveland has never won more than 111. Many consider the modern era to have started in 1901 or thereabouts.

Oops, I stand corrected as to the schedule. That would certainly be an interesting prop.

Cubs are not worried about the Cards, they're worried about making the playiffs. And I'm not saying it's a matter of the Cards being worried about the Cubs, just more that they'd like to stick it to the Cubs by hurting their chances. In reverse position last year, Houston talked chummy about STL. They may return the favor. I think these two teams have a lovefest. I'm just saying I would be very surprised if Houston doesn't take at least 2 of the 3.
