He inquired into my business and we had a long discussion about wagering. He was in complete agreement with me on the subject by all counts. After I explained a little bit about the JD's feelings on wagering he went into detail of how in the post office, gambling is strictly against the rules being a federal office, BUT he said they gamble everyday. Parlay cards, pools, fantasy, etc....

He also confirmed with me about certain judicial officials locally who partake in wagering activity.

He said he had 3 sisters and they were all over 70. Each were Riverboat fans and he could not see any difference in allowing them to waste their measly income on a boat but not allow me to waste mine on sports.

One common word came from our discussion.

HYPOCRISY!

Redeye: I did 5+ years at USPS, as mailhandler. We didn't gamble much at all, mostly betting for coffee. The bets were usually placed on so-and-so calling in sick, or how late some guy would be tonight, Will Joe be Sober ? , Did Larry take a bath ?, will Keith wear the same pair of jeans AGAIN ? That sort of thing.

I hated the job, and the people I worked with. The benefits were great though. Pat and OT good too. I just couldn't hack it 20+ more years. Especially graveyard.

I just counted and I have received 39 pieces of mail from books. Some of it appears to be good reading. The mail carriers have never mentioned it. They do like delivering the Stuff magazine though.

I have heard some of the bastards stole like valuable baseball cards and stuff that only got delivered by mail and couldn’t be purchased..<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Also wouldn’t be surprised if 1/3 or so of all credit card fraud is perpetrated by these guys, not too hard to figure out what’s in those non-descript envelopes with the hard thing inside..

Brock: Theft is rare by postal employees. The average career postal employee makes 50K +, over $20 per hour ( after a few years) gets OT, 4 weeks vacay after 3 yrs, sick time, benies, pension. I knew many pulling 60-70 k with the OT.

Theft really is rare. When it happens someone gets caught , it's news. Also remember there are about 7-800,000 employees. I never saw anyone steal mail. If it's valuable, it's usually sent registered, or certified, so there is a trail. It's not worth it to most to mess with theft.
