Houston aren't they the team to beat now in the NL?

I would think if they get in they are the most dangerous club, even over St.Louis...With just about as much firepower as the Cardinals and the big one two of Clemens and Oswalt...who's going to want to play them?:heh:

the biggest threat to the Cards in the NL were the Cubs, and thankfully they are almost done. Nothing but crybabies. Have you ever noticed, they NEVER lose. it's always the umpires, or Steve Bartman, or Steve Stone's fault they can't get over the hump.

Facing Oswalt and Clemens back to back , is there any duo in MLB at this time better?

Boston's lineup is better and I would take Schilling and Pedro and not feel too inferior:discuss:

Woops ... excuse me ... You did say NL in your Post... I think the NL is wide open with Cards a slight favorite because their offense is the best !

At this point I'd take Oswalt and Clemens over Shilling and Pedro...very very slight edge...Seriously though, you look around the league, who has the best starters 1-4?

With the A's struggling and more than likely not getting in, no team has four real quality starters....the Cubs do, but... lol RIP

Speaking of the AL playoffs Yankees Righty Orlando Hernandez was hammered tonight for 5 runs, 5 hits in 3 innings while losing to the Blue Jays 7-0. He struck out a pair and walked three in the loss. With Kevin Brown trying to return from a three-week layoff after breaking his left hand, and Javier Vazquez battling inconsistency on the mound, the last thing that New York needs is a problem with one of its other three starters. El Duque has a tired shoulder and is a big question mark for Joe Torre as the playoffs begin next week.

Look out for Anaheim and Houston...if they get in look out, both teams on fire, both may have gotten hot at the right time...

As a Cardinal fan, Houston scares me very much. I am rooting for the Giants for the wild card, as the Cards would crush them. The thing that I am really worried about is Larussa screwing things up yet again. If they dont make the Series again, I can only hope that Larussa is finally out of town!!

Interesting perspective from a Cards fan...If I were a Cards fan, I would think the same thing ace... Houston getting new life is scary...Remember last week, the Giants were one inning away from finishing them off!

No great pitching staffs left so I would think thew Astros have a real chance. Love my 50/1 NL bet

Because of pitching Astros have a great chance. And they are hot. Big possibility.

St. Louis has Rolen and Carpenter hurt with Edmonds slumping. While they dominated regular season, they are staggering down the stretch. Don't see them in World Series.

Atlanta has a good chance. IMO, LA does not as starting pitching is lacking and they don't have a big offense.

SF is the wild card just because they have Barry Bonds.

Just IMO.

Houston is on fire but how can you say Anaheim is? They are 11-9 their last 20, 6-4 their last 10. Choakland is just giving it to them.

As a Cardinal Fan, I am not as confident as I was 3 weeks ago when injury bugaboo hit and LaRussa started resting starters. I will say that LaRussa and Cards have had nothing at all to play for except breaking franchise win record. Houston has played well down the stretch but keep a couple of things in mind. First, Houston has never won a playoff series. Second, if they get in, they will play Atlanta who has put them out of at least last 2 maybe the last 3 times in playoffs with a wimper. Third, their big guns have done absolutely nothing in the playoffs in years past. I am talking about Biggio,Bagwell, and others. With that being said, I think if they get in, they will break their playoff losing streak and beat Atlanta setting up a St.Louis/Houston Championship Series. This would scare me a lot as about 3 years ago, Cards/Astros tied for division but Astros won tiebreaker. Cardinals still recognized that year as with a division banner and Houston franchise is not happy about it. They would like nothing more than to beat Cards. All I can say is go Giants!

If Houston gets in, I think they are the team to beat, though they won't be favored. They are peaking at the right time and Clemens and Oswalt have been lights out for over a month.

The Cardinals will not win the NL. I will fade them, and fade them hard.

I love that the Braves are not mentioned in this thread, just the way I want it. These guys are playing great ball and are solid up and down. Have a nice NL future and like having them going into the post season as a dog for once.

Speaking of the Cards

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Woody Williams has the fewest victories of any Cardinals starter. But he, and not Matt Morris, will get the honor of starting their playoff opener.

"More than anything else, he's feeling physically the best he's felt all year," manager Tony La Russa said Saturday. "We think it gives us the best shot in case there's a Game 5."
The rotation had been aligned to give Morris (15-10, 4.72) the nod in Game 1, and Williams (11-8, 4.18) had been scheduled to pitch in the regular-season finale on Sunday and then go in Game 3 on the road. Instead, Dan Haren will fill in on Sunday and Morris moves to what had been Williams' playoff slot.

Jason Marquis (15-6, 3.66) will pitch in Game 2 and Jeff Suppan (16-9, 4.16) will work in Game 4. The Cardinals are without Chris Carpenter (15-5, 3.46), who's been sidelined with nerve damage in his right biceps since Sept. 18 - the day they clinched the NL Central.

Carpenter likely would have pitched Game 1 if he was healthy.

Woody Williams has to be the worst ever playoff Game #1 starter for any team with the best record in their league.
