JOE MONTANA would be considered an AVERAGE QB.......

........if he had the current NINER supporting cast around him instead of the 20 hall of famers he played with.

Instead he is considered arguably the best QB ever.

With this team, he doesnt even come close to making the HALL OF FAME.............no way!

Right place, right time.

You could say that about most great QB's, except Elway who basically had no running game til terrel Davis arrived...Unless you count Sammy Winder and Gerald Wilhite lol

JMAN- Precisely why in my mind Elway was clearly a better QB than Montana...............as well as quite a few other quarterbacks.

Will not take anything away from JOE though, as he was trully a great quarterback.

Montana is the best QB ever. You guys make me laugh when you bring up how so & so obviously did what they did because they had great players around them. Well if it was that cut & dry, how come other good or great QB's couldn't do the same when they had the same kind of players around them?

It isn't so cut & dry!!!

Who said that? No one knocked Montana here that I see...

John Unitas may be the best ever....47 straight games throwing a TD , back in the "hard to throw era":) ....I love arguing with EGD, he never thinks he's been wrong in his life:think: ...you should be happy EGD, you get to kee Mike Martz for a few more weeks after tonight:manwh:

Montana knew how to win & to say he wouldn't have a chance at the HOF with the players the 49ers have is an insult to me. He just had the unmeasurable character traits that are the differences between greatness & a serviceable QB.

Ehh I wouldn't get too excited about the Rams performance considering the defense they faced. Lets see what they do against Seattle next week. Martz is still a GENIUS!

I Agree With Egd. How Do You Take Away From Montana What He Did For Years? He Was The Ultimate Winner. Big Deal He Had Good Players Around Him. Did It Ever Occur To You That It Was Montana That Made These Guys The Players They Are? I Guarantee You Montana Made Rice A Better Wr. And Brent Jones On Any Other Team Might Have Been Mediocre. Montana Got These Guys The Ball. No One Else. Period.

I don't feel like arguing.....I don't think Fish was taking anything away from Montana, just saying this Niners team would have trouble with anyone trying to lead them...QB's need surrounding talent, when Montana arrived out of Notre Dame, he wasn't an overnight sensation...With Craig, Rice, Taylor, Brent Jones, his life became much easier....

Montana was as great as any QB IMO...Some will always say he didn't have the cannon arm which takes away some, but I disagree, he didnt have the cannon, but he had the accuracy which was perhaps the best ever....I remember when he Montana outgunned Elway on MNF when Joe was with Kansas City, they went back and forth, and very late in the game Montana drove the Chiefs on a last minute drive, threw a perfect pass to the front corner of the endzone on a dime! to beat Denver and Elway....One of, if not the best MNF game ever!

Journey-
Wasn't Montana in his late 30's when he threw that pass to a non superstar receiver against Denver? I don't even think the Chiefs had a good receiver when Montana played with them. They had an aging Marcus Allen who didn't play every down, but that was about it on offense. Montana didn't have all the physical characteristics but at least he had the brains many QB's didn't have. How about some of those stupid interceptions players made in their careers like Plummer, Testerverde, Warner, Brunell, Grbec etc. etc. the list goes on and on. Those passes into double coverage that leave you saying WTF?

Wide Receivers on the 1994 Chiefs ( not much actually) Joe was leading a nameless group!

Montana will probably break out a new pair of Skechers for his 57th birthday.
Claims the footwear supports him about as well as his former 49er's teammates did on their way to 4 Super Bowl wins.
w-thumbs!^
