The inside scoop on tonight's home plate umpire is that it will be Randy Marsh. Marsh is a huge over ump with a lifetime over/under record of 138-106 including 15-9 this year. Marsh's career K/BB ratio is 1.61, which is the 2nd lowest of any ump over the last 8 years. His ratio of 1.54 K/BB over the last 3 seasons is the lowest of any ump. With 2 of the most patient teams in MLB going at it (only SF with Barry Bonds has drawn more walks than Boston and NY), and nerves that accompany a big series like this, there's liable to be a few free passes issued tonight.

Wheredatreezat - Marsh's home/away record for the past 8 seasons is 138-119 which is about average for MLB umps, therefore I see no advantage for either team in that respect. However, Schilling has incredible control (37 BB's in 237 inn) and more power, so IMO he is less dependent on getting the call on borderline pitches as is Mussina. Therefore, I think if there is any advantage it would be for the RedSox.

Blue - according to the NYPost, Marsh will be starting behind the plate tonight. See link: http://www.nypost.com/sports/yankees/30148.htm

Thanks, unfortunately I was fearing the same thing you just said, was hoping I was wrong.

Still on the Yanks though and again, thanks for the input.

I'm on the Yanks, too, WDTA. At +135, at home, and with their ace throwing, there is way too much value on the Yanks to pass up. And once they go to the pens, the Sox will be at the disadvantage, as their relievers have less control than the Yanks.

MD Kid- Good information. This home plate umpire has a strike zone about four square inches wide and about three square inches high. If that. Of course, it doesn't help that Curt Schilling isn't 100% healthy.
