I know the rules say to hit on a 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 when the dealer is showing 7 or better... but

do any of you follow your gut? I have wanted to many times and not take the hit, but i feel im gonna tick off the table if i dont take that hit.

opinions/insight ?

depends upon where your position is at the table imo...3rd base gives you the ability to see cards which can influence your "gut"...although a 6 deck shoe and constant shuffle will seldom, if ever, provide any edge to the "hit" unless ur one good counter of cards...

Only time I wouldn't hit those would be if the true count shows the deck is loaded with big cards....if you are not counting I would hit em.

With that said, go with your gut if you want...as long as you know the odds are poorer. I don't buy into the "screwing" the table stuff, just as much chance of helping vs hurting the table. Tough part is explaining that to some drunks who just lost that hand. People generally only notice when your non by the book move hurts them.

good luck

You have to count cards to have shot at BJ period or have some math edge

Dnoonan is 100%... Unless you are a card counter... FORGET YOUR GUT...

Vegas was built from nothing but Desert from people following their 'GUT'.

Most online casinos/software differs in streaks run by the player & dealer, etc. I do believe there are times that you can ignore those basic blackjack rules when it comes to hitting in the occasions you listed above. What I will never understand is why most players always assume that the dealers face down card is another a face/high card. You can simply look at your own hands dealt, and pretend your 2nd card is face down. Is it usually a face card.....?......no, it's not. I do believe it takes somone with a good memory of past hands played though. For example, if I play 3 hands and the dealer's face down card was a high card each time, the next hand I may hold on 12-16. I have been very successful in the many years I've played online in winning hands by making the dealer bust. Think about it, how does the dealer win the majority of it's hands......by making you bust. As I said , it just depends on the software also, because I have been playing at one book's casino where the dealer beats me with a 6 showing 8 out of 10 hands and rarely every busts on that 6!! Im telling you, I am not exaggerating. I have been meaning to come on here and create a thread about it but never did, but thought I'd throw it out there.......

SuperSunday and Bucsfan cost me big money by playing rules. My gut would have gained me more.

If you really want to piss the other people off, grab the last seat, bet the minumum and keep hitting on everything when the dealer has a 4,5, or 6. The reaction from the rest of the table is worth the few bucks you'll be out of. :manwh:

I wouldn't worry about ticking off the table. It's your money and blackjack is not a team sport. Besides, you're just as likely to help them as hurt them. If it helps, make sure to point it out and jokingly ask for a tip. Chances are they'll leave you alone after that.

Just be aware that those plays do indeed cost you money in the long run. If you only do it with 15 and 16 vs a 10, say, then you can minimize your disadvantage. Against a 7, though, it's imperative that you hit because if you get anything half decent you will have gained a lot. Against a 10 if you hit your 15 and get a 3, say, you still won't be in too good shape.

So you're asking if your hunch would be better than a computer simulating 6 billion hands of blackjack and determining the proper play...

as Fishhead would say...

proceed.

Do whatever you want but realise that basic stategy minimizes your loss.So few people know basic that they get pxssed off anyway. In particular you should always hit soft 18 against dealer 9 and 10, but few people are aware of this and get upset when you take a card that would bust dealer.

Isn't that the truth. It's unreal how many morons think they know what they're doing and get pissed at you when you hit soft 18 against a 10. I get a dirty look from someone about 90% of the time. Same people think it's a sin to split 4's against 5 and 6 on a 6-deck shoe with doubling after splitting, and they won't double an 11 against a 10, because they "don't want to risk it." The fact that it takes, what an hour or so memorize basic strategy, you would think people would just learn this stuff if they are going to play. And I don't care how you play your cards, so mind your own business when I play mine. I usually just play craps now, and find it a much better game, and more exciting.

"Table manners" ... ah... ok. I get it.

In other words, you're asking if you should make the wrong play when you're wagering your own money so that you can make other people at the table happy.

Ok.

Proceed.

What puzzles me is you "experts" who follow the "rules" and go with percentages.. I guess you guys just KILL the table everytime right? I've played by the "rules" all of my gambling life and Ive never won anything significant at the black jack table.

Noreaga- no, blackjack is a losing game over the long run, even with basic strategy. The only way to win is to count cards. But if you're not counting, you might as well follow basic strategy, or you're hurting your chances.
