All the Red Sox wanted last night was one more chance to send out their two aces, Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling. Even as they faced elimination against the Yankees in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series, the Sox finalized plans to go with Martinez in Game 5 today at Fenway Park and announced Schilling as their Game 6 starter tomorrow in the Bronx if they got that far.

As for Schilling, he threw in the bullpen for the second time in three days, testing his injured right ankle while wearing a specially designed high-top cleat for cushioning and support. He threw for about 15 minutes and drove off the mound with more force than he did Friday in the first session. "He looked pretty confident," Sox medical director William Morgan said after monitoring the session with a number of team officials, including general manager Theo Epstein.

It is very difficult to wager one way or another when nobody knows for sure which Schilling We would be facing. The Schilling of last week was pathetic.... the Schilling of almost all of this season was lights out .... seems like a gamble to me.... oh yes, that,s what We gamblers do, isn't it it !

Kermit- Dont think Curt would go out there again if he didnt feel confident in his ability and confortable with his ankle.

fishead,

Red Sox are pretty desperate. They would throw Schilling out there even if his injury is very little improved. Its impossible to say, I think, what Schillings condition is.

Teams never want to admit the extent of injuries to keep the info from the opponent. I HOPE Schilling can pitch effectively, but who knows?

As far as gambling that game, its probably a crapshoot. too much is unknown. Lieber pitched very well game 2, but probably will be a dog to Schilling. Probably a bet on Lieber is smart, but who knows? ( And no red sox fan is gonna make that bet)

It seems to me that the Yanks lineup often struggles with the knuckler Wakefield. If the Sox are going to win, they'll need to do it in 7. I'd save Schilling for 7 and give him an extra day of rest. Let Wakefield pitch 6.

still see him pitching a good game 3 runs 6 or 7 innings..

While the Yanks still look like the best bet I don't like:

1) Facing Pedro at Fenway.
2) A motivated Schilling feeling better than he did in game 1.
3) Wakefield who can stifle the Yanks at any point. The Yanks hitting him the other day is an anomaly. Normally, they struggle against him.
4) A motivated Red Sox team that believes they can win. Last night was a big confidence boost. They beat Mariano and got the clutch hits while the Yanks did nothing but strand runners.

I'll give Schilling the benefit of the doubt: it's just for one game anyhow. If Namath lasted for years on painkillers and booze.....
