Do you think CAL RIPKEN would have asked to wear YAZ's #8 if he had been traded to Boston?

No kidding. No respect for Largent what an *******.

What a classy act by both the Seahawks and Steve Largent (he would have had to agree to this before it could happen!). It shows the proper respect for Jerry Rice, who holds all the receiving records in the NFL. I admire the Seattle organization and Largent in particular for this act.

It's just plain sad. Rice is a cancer at this point whever he is playing and his legend is getting tarnished in the process

What is wrong with Rice wearing the #. From CBS Sportsline:

Rice asked Largent for permission to unretire the number in Seattle, which Rice has worn throughout his NFL career, and received his blessing.
"When he said that, it sent chills through my body," Rice said. "It meant the world to me. I know what he did for this team. When you think about the Seattle Seahawks, you think about Steve Largent."

How is that disrespecting Largent? It's not like he said give me 80 or else.

Not so sure Jerry has not always been this way. I remember after they won the super bowl, I think Steve Young won the MVP. Instead of savoring the team win, he complained to all who would listen, that he should have been named MVP. I think he used the words white quarterback. A lot of athletes pretend to be team players, and grab and track all of the individual glory they can. Jerry is Jerry. He speaks his mind. I actually respect him for being honest. His on the field accomplishments are at another level. Not bad for a bricklayer's son. From a small school. Is he a cancer? That is a matter of perception. He did not make the Raiders cancerous. That was Tim Brown. What about T.O.? Was he a cancer? Undoubtedly.

Maybe I am just happy to have met him at the Rocklin training camp. Where a lot of players just blew off the fans, Jerry took the time to sign and take photos with all sorts of fans, their kids. If you could have seen the smiles these #80 jersey wearing kids walked away with. It was heartwarming. If you want a totally against the world I hate you all player, try Barry Bonds. I have seen him, in person, make kids cry. One time at a Giants game a little girl came up to the screen while Barry was on deck. She said, hit it to McCovey cove Mr. Bonds. He turned to look at her, grabbed his crotch and spit. The entire section around her just sighed. She hung her head and walked back to her seat. Let me tell you one thing. Jerry Rice is good for the game, and with fans. Just my perspective.

The entire sports world has been turned into a fickle mass of pessimists who at the drop of a hat will turn on a team/player/coach. I wonder if people even enjoy sports anymore...or if we're all destined to sit and stare at ESPN news all day and criticize every single move that every professional athlete makes.

It doesn't happen in any other profession I don't think (where every move you make is criticized by THOUSANDS of amatuers)... It's like everyone is trying to be a sports columnist.

Seeing this was the capper to the miserable night I had as a Yankee fan. I grew up a Giants fan but respected the way Largent played and went about his business.

Largent was a class act as a player and during his time as a congressman serving his community.

I used to be a fan of Jerry Rice but this took the cake. Unfortunately, I'll remember him for his play AND his antics as of late, the bad hair-do, and the size of his ego as demonstrated by this move. His legend is tarnished. The sad part is that he insists on playing another year.

You are being sarcastic, right?

RICE ASKED LARGENT FOR PERMISSION TO UNRETIRE THE NUMBER.

I have to stop reading this thread...

This is sickening. Rice didn't give a chit. If he cared so much then why ask to unretire the number. Wear something different as recognition that you are not the same number 80 and your new goal is to prove that you can still get it done at your age.

I read long ago Rice is obsessed with his uniform, right down to how he tucks in his shirt, I am not in the least bit surprised ...Rice is still walking around as if its 1992...

Wasn't there another player who wore a retired number recently, when traded?

At this point for Rice it's all about the attention he can get. Either negative or positive I don't think he cares just as long as his name stays in the spotlight.

JJ started out playing nice GD, even getting some of the staff to like him, but inevitably it seems it will end up like old times.

I thought it was bad enough Rice asked for the trade, he just makes me more sick every day. What a joke he is becoming, he acts like he will really be a major contributor there when he came in to help with a 4-game suspension for the real starter. Nice move Jerry, you used to exude class but I guess that is what we should expect from anyone that spends time with the RAIDERS.
