Data for September showed that 4.2 million visiting a gambling or sweepstakes site, making 16% of the total online audience.

The data also revealed the popularity of online advertising within the sector.

Three of the top 10 gambling advertisers had more than 10 advertising campaigns running in September.

This included: Jack Pot Joy (23 campaigns) William Hill Online (13) and Get Minted (10).

Gabrielle Prior, Nielsen European internet analyst said: “It is clear that for some people gambling has become part of their day to day surfing behaviour.

With Nielsen’s data tracking advertisers can benchmark their sites in more depth and ad agencies and advertisers alike can use the research to plan where to place online advertising and where to buy advertising space.”
