In 2001, Doyle Upson of Las Vegas bragged that he had a $44,000 winning ticket on a sports bet he made at the Stratosphere hotel.
Among those he bragged to was 22-year-old Bridget Pascua. One night while smoking crack with a prostitute friend named Kimberly Crawford, 33, and an alleged drug dealer named Ralph Crispin, Pascua devised a plan to go to Upson's apartment to steal the ticket.
When they got there, Pascua demanded Upson give her his winning ticket. When he refused, Pascua ordered Crawford to hit him in the head with a hammer until he handed over the ticket. According to court testimony, Crawford hit him repeatedly with the clawed end of the hammer.
When Upson still refused to hand over the ticket, Pascua got in on the beating. She began by forcing Valium-laced water down Upson's throat, she then tried to smother and strangle him.
When that didn't work, Pascua placed a pillow on Upson's face, stood on his throat, filled his nose with caulking, stuffed a sock in his mouth and pulled a rope around his neck.
The torture killing continued for about eight hours during which time Pascua, Crawford and Crispin smoked crack. After searching Upson's apartment, they never found the winning ticket, or any money.
Last month, a jury found Pascua guilty of murder. She now faces a minimum of 54 years to life in prison. Crawford previously confessed to her role in the beating death and was sentenced to life in prison with possibility of parole after 20 years.
So why the hell did Upson not turn over the ticket?
