Gambling is not only hard on your pocket but bad for your health, according to the British Medical Journal.

Although gambling is not traditionally considered a public health issue, just under 1% of the British population have a serious problem, and the rate may be twice that in adolescents who feed slot machines, says an article in the journal today. Those hooked can be affected by depression, insomnia, intestinal disorders, migraine and other stress related problems. Some become suicidal.

Mark Griffiths, a professor of gambling studies in the psychology division of Nottingham Trent University, says health professionals need to develop strategies to help gambling addicts.

He says the social costs of gambling are high. A study of women admitted to accident and emergency in the US found that a woman whose partner was a problem gambler was over 10 times more likely to be assaulted.

When casinos were opened in South Dakota last year child abuse rose by 42% and domestic assaults by 80%.

Some heavy gamblers have withdrawal problems, he writes. One study found 65% of pathological gamblers got at least one physical problem when they stopped.

The stress of playing over your head can definately lead to some problems. Try and play within your means. Nothing wrong with a $10 wager.

This data is old and it is misleading. Casinos opened in South Dakota in the early 90's. I have many friends who live in South Dakota and in general the amount of abuse did not climb that much in one year.

Perhaps they are referring to the reservations where the casinos were built. Not that Native Americans are naturally prone to abuse but the social situations that they are put in can lead to that. Gambling may have been a mitigating factor in those statistics but in the average American home gambling will not lead to that big of a rise in abuse.

The health factors associated with gambling are what each individual makes of it.

I have come to find out that it can become extreme at both ends of the spectrum.

Heres hoping we all take the healthy road...........:toast:

dimesplayer, the article you are refering to is about the elderly. it argues that their gambling on things like poker builds a stronger community amoung them and keeps them socially active. being socially active is the most underated aspect of good over all health.
