MONTREAL (AP) Former NFL player Tommy Kane was sentenced Friday to 18 years in prison for the stabbing death of his wife.

Kane, 40, a Montreal native, was a receiver for the Seattle Seahawks from 1988-92, catching 52 passes for 776 yards in 1990. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in September.

Superior Court Justice Fraser Martin, who sentenced Kane, called the killing of Tammara Shaikh a senseless act by her ''manipulative'' and ''narcissictic'' estranged husband.

Shaikh, a bank employee who had four children with Kane, was beaten and stabbed on Nov. 30, 2003, at the home of Kane's mother. Prosecutors said Kane grabbed his wife by the hair, dragged her into the kitchen, smashed her head against the floor and fatally stabbed her in the neck.
