Pirates outfielder Jason Bay became the first Pirate and first ever native Canadien to win NL rookie of the year. Bay hit .282 with 26 homers and 82 RBIs. Bay is from Trail, British Columbia, he had the most homers by an NL rookie since Albert Pujols hit 37 three years ago. Pittsburgh had been the only pre-expansion team without a rookie of the year.

A's SS Bobby Crosby won the AL rookie of the year award. His .239 average was the lowest ever (non-pitcher) recorded by a rookie of the year.

too bad there is not a manager in the league who would rather have jason bay over the PADRES Khaleel Greene, a snub if you ask me, already one of the best defensive short stops in the game and was carrying the padres till he got hurt with a month to go. Bay might be the rookie of the year, but Greene was clearly the most talented.
