Fish: West Lyon scored 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter tonight to pull out a 14-7 win at home vs. Emmetsburg. Emmetsburg was the class 2A defending champ. The wind played a major factor in the game throughout. Congrats to West Lyon.

Thanks for the update.........very familar with many former Emmetsburg players as I only grew up 30 some miles from there and attended Jr. College there.

Emmetsburg has been a football factory for years, having won many state titles and producing many great players.

Wow! Can't believe there is a thread for this.

Too bad about the Galva-Holstein Pirates. They used to be in my conference back when I was in high school (the old Maple Valley Conference, I guess they have districts now).

Listened to the Harlan/Denison-schleswig game tonight online. Harlan really throttled them.

I'd take WDV -6.5 and Bettendorf +3.

I'd have Harlan -28.5 against Waukee in the 3A semis.

Anyone know of any good online webcasts for the playoffs? I only know of FMCTC which is based out of Harlan.

so cal baseball....the best way to find online broadcasts would be to contact the station carrying a particular game. if they are not online, at least they should be able to direct you a site. i'm from carroll, iowa and as fishead wrote,
have covered many football games, including many involving harlen, as both carroll public and kuemper catholic played the cyclones. no more conferences in football. the districts pair up schools of similar size in determining playoffs. kuemper this year did play maple valley-anthon oto. hope this helps.:howdy:

Welcome to Florida. I watched the part of the game last nite. NIU vs Toledo. Hard to believe all the football games I wathced and never complained about the cold. I bet is was under 50 last night. Brutal.

The Iowa state champ would not be a top 20 team in California. A home in SoCal is worth triple what a home in Iowa is worth. A girl that is a 5 in SoCal would be a 10 in Iowa.

Are the football stadiums for high school football games usually not over half capacity in California and of those fans that do attend, do most leave midway through the 3rd quarter as they do in all the college and NFL games in California?

I would imagine it would be no different.

Thanks hawkeye171, I will check it out. I think FMCTC carries many of the finals games, but maybe only the Harlan/Waukee semifinal. If I could pick it up I would certainly listen to the WDV/Ankeny game.

I used to wrestle and run track against the kids from Kuemper. They were too big of a school for us to play in football, basketball, etc. Carroll was also a little out of the way, but not too far.

We were 1-A (I went to West Monona) some years we were 2-A. We were always on the borderline of school size. Depending on the size of the freshman class coming in/senior class going out.

Railbird, I agree with you about the California talent versus the Iowa talent. However, it really gets down the point that all the schools here in SoCal are so much bigger than the schools in Iowa. I would doubt it if there are more than 20 teams in all of SoCal that were as small as the high school I went to in Iowa. In Iowa, there were litterally hundreds of schools as small as my high school. Making a comparison is extremely difficult.

One thing though, the football crowds out here are very comparable to the Iowa crowds when it comes to football. The SoCal crowds are big and into it (not unlike most high schools in Iowa). One thing that SoCal can't touch is the enthusiam for basketball and wrestling. My town (Onawa) had less than 3,000 people in it and a gym that held probably 1,500 people. If you wanted to see a high school basketball game on a friday night you had to show up early or you might not get in. Here, schools that are as big as the biggest schools in Iowa sometimes have basketball crowds that are smaller than the majority of 1-A schools in Iowa. I can't even get into how important girls basketball was where I grew up (1964 state champions). Go to a high school girls game here and you can count the whole crowd on both hands sometimes.

As for the girls... sorry, but Rail is right on about that. They can't compare. Honestly, its like a donkey showing up at the Kentucky Derby. I don't see what that has to do with sports however.

nothing very good has ever happend in onawa for me, couldn't even win at the casino. :WTF:

hawkeye171... nothing too good ever happened to me there either; that's why I'm in the San Fernando Valley now. I respect anyone and everyone who loves Iowa, but it wasn't for me. As for Onawa... if god was going to give the world an enema, you know where he'd stick the needle.

I've been there a total of two times in the last 20 years. Once to see my grandmother right before she died and a week after that to go to her funeral. That was over 11 years ago. It would take a pretty big funeral to get me back there again.

Never been to the Casino there. Thank god it wasn't there when I was growing up. Probably would have dropped every dime I ever had. I see that they have a racetrack there now, too.

All we had was "the Loop" (driving around town in a circle) and Mike's Pizza. We had a few easy chicks, but in hindsight they were a little hard on the eyes. Growing up in Onawa before cable TV, the internet and not having a car, I thought they were just fine. God loves a man who leaves Onawa with no money in his pocket and a dream. Life's been good ever since.
