My wife and I are going on our third Caribbean cruise next month. We are headed to the following islands: Cozumel, Cayman Islands (still ok after hurricane to do most stuff - they say), Belize and Roatan. Does anyone have any unique places to go or excursions that we should look at? We have done a lot of the "at sea" stuff excursions and like those. Just wondering if there is something unique out there on these islands that may not be publicized in the general cruise info and/or searching basics online. We have a pretty good handle on the cruise part of it and some good shore excursions. Looking for something different.

And before this gets out of hand...

1. No, we are not going to engage in a 3 or moresome (much to my dismay).
2. Yes, we like to drink and gamble - any casinos anywhere on these islands?
3. We're not too big on jungle or ruins type historical stuff. More into fun.
4. We tend to be pretty much "american picky eating types" so that prevents us from being overly-adventurous with cuisine.

I'd now expect to be told to keep my sorry ass on the boat for a week, but maybe I'll get lucky here...lol

make sure you swim with the sting rays on grand cayman and c ozumel is just party heaven and women buy jewerly , never saw a casino on the islands just on the ship, i played dice to earn a 30% discount on the next cruise

Chadman,

Stay away from Belize or just don't leave the ship when it reaches the BZ port. There is really nothing to do their and the tour operators inland are very dissorganized. The bus company has also been having some funding problems and earlier this year the ships refused to let people board them until the busses were serviced. As far as I know a few of the Key's had their coral messed up from the first Hurricane to pass through the Gulf.

Maybe in ten years Belize will become a better place to visit.
STAY AWAY FROM THE PRINCESS HOTEL AND CASINO!!!!

Belize is fantastic, it's Belize City that's the dump. Best thing is to get out into the country. If you're into Mayan ruins, there are some really really good ones. Very nice, diverse ecology also (eg. rainforests). Overall, I found the people very helpful and friendly. Some very cool caves as well for the skelunkering-inclined.
If you're into scuba or snorkel, Belize offers some of the best in the world (2nd largest coral reef in the world (Australia #1)), though I don't know how good it is in the area the ship arrives at (my experience was at Amberges (sp?) Quay, which is part of Belize, but a short puddle-jumper flight away). Bottom-line...get off the ship and leave Belize City a.s.a.p. It is in the country and in/on the water wherein the adventures await!
Bon Voyage!

Thanks for all the input guys. whormoan, I think we are going the week before you, December 12, something like that. Can't remember the ship, but I think it's the Norwegian Sun. I know it's Norwegian. I have heard plenty of negative stuff about both Roatan and Belize, so the comments here are pretty much what I had heard before. We have about 5 shore excursions we are looking at, and I know that we are set for Cozumel and Cayman. We had a great time doing one catamaran snorkle party and then hitting the main drag there for some partying there. We're doing the Stingray City and Cayman city tour there, that's a nice day. The other two are in question at the moment. We may just stay on the boat in Belize, we sprung for a balcony suite this time, so that will be great.

Rick, what is wrong with the Princess? Probably won't play there, just wondering. I think I'll stay away from gambling period this trip, seems to be the only time the wife and I get into arguments on a cruise...lol.

Charlie, interesting idea about Caribe. Might look into that, although wife might not be so excited about it. I've worked with a lot of books the past few years, and should take advantage of that more.

Again, thanks, guys,

Chadman,

The princess is a complete unregulated Casino where anything can happen. Most of the time not good! I live next door and can assure you the place is not worth visiting.

Hari Seldon is correct for the most part. Placencia to the South has some decent resorts. The Turtle Inn, Francis F Coppola's place has the best food in the whole Country. However, not one resort has a beach!!

The islands are the best part of Belize if you like scuba, although you must dedicate your trip to really enjoy this part of BZ.

Another really cool idea if you have the time is to arrive in BZ, rent a car and drive up the Northern Highway to the border of Mexico (1.5 hrs). On the way you can stop and see the Myan ruins and visit some of the small villages.
Once you hit Chetumal Mexico you continue up the 307 highway stopping all along the way to enjoy the Gulf waters and more ruins. The road starts at Bakalar and continues through Limones, Tulum, Playa Del Carmen and finally Cancun.

In four hours you arrive in paradise. It is amazing how a 5.5 hour road trip takes you from cardboard houses to beautiful resorts and beaches. Another bonus is the speed limit on that road. NONE. The times i quoted are based on a distance of 550 Kilometers. Depending on your car you could shave off a few hours.

If anyone has any questions about BZ please feel free to ask. Maybe I could steer you from wasting time and money before you arrive.

Rick
